The trouble is that Piano is nothing like her mother. She wants to be, but all she has to go on are a few minutes of blurry memory from right when she was born, and her father's biased accounts. And the not-dragon who looks like her mother but isn't, quite. Piano still identifies with her mother, though, or at least what she knows: that she just up and left one day, leaving her mate and hatchlings behind for an uncertain future.

Piano relates because she thinks she knows what her mother felt like in that moment. And she could be right, or she could be wrong. What she knows is that she herself is lonely, and that her magic lets her see through illusions and conjured images. It's to the point where she can stare through the mental picture made up from lies and pinpoint exactly which details are true.

She wonders if her mother had the same problem, of knowing that other dragons don't want her around.
