Oftentimes, those that are quiet, are the best at picking out the emotions of others. It is they that take the time to watch facial expressions, listen for a slight inflection of the word that betrays what the speaker is feeling. Parnassus, silent as he is, cannot do this. He, unlike other Skydancers, cannot sense the emotions of those around him. Without this ability, he finds it difficult interpreting what his clanmates are feeling, even with the aid of expressions and cues in tone. This alone is enough to ostracize him from fellow Skydancers, but is not the only thing that sets him apart. When he is around Skydancers, they can sense nothing from him. Not a thing. Only a coldness, a void where there should have been emotion, even just a hint. Ronele, who posses a much stronger ability, can reach deep within him and still find nothing. Their disconcernation around him is justified for Parnassus never seems to feel anything. He has no interest in clan affairs, no outward concern for those around him. He is unsympathetic to those who have shunned him so coldly. What they don't realize is that he may not be able to sense emotions, but he can see just how tainted a dragon is by the Shade, and how closely they are connected with their deity. |
Parnassus was hatched into a mixed clan. His father was an Imperial and his mother a Skydancer. Alongside his egg, there were two others. It was a rather small clutch and both parents had hoped for more. When the eggs started to crack, his parents gathered eagerly around the nest. The other two eggs hatched first, both Skydancers that could sense the joy rolling off their parents in waves. They could feel that they were loved.
Parnassus' egg stood unmoving, not even a shudder. When the dragoness reached out to touch her egg, she was shocked to find it cold. Dismayed, they rushed the egg to the clan healer. With gentle prodding, the healer surmised that the hatchling within was alive, but refused to hatch.
"Give him time, he will come out when he is ready," she told the distraught parents.
They returned Parnassus' egg to the nest. His mother spent days and nights watching over the egg, desperately trying to convey her feelings of wanting him to hatch. "Come now, little one, I want to see you," she would murmur to his egg. But to her growing fear, she could feel nothing from the egg. The others, before hatching, had displayed basic emotion in response to her own feelings.
Finally, Parnassus' egg began to wobble. He emerged into the world with a crack and from that moment, they all knew something was terribly wrong with him.
Despite this, they cared for him, or tried to. As he grew older, the emptiness they felt around him was too much. When they deemed him old enough to fend for himself, they drove him from the clan. Parnassus wandered many years after his banishment. He stayed in clan after clan, and even had a few nests, but he was never wanted around for long. Who wanted a mate who didn't know what love felt like?
Things changed when he came to the Sun Star Clan. In the warmth of their hearts, the clan accepted him, or at least tolerated his presence. They gave him a room of his own. The corridor leading to Parnassus' room is lined with candles whose lights bathe the hallway in an eerie red. In the room where he sleeps on a pile of furs is an ord of red light.
It is here where he conducts his readings of those within the clan, ever watchful for signs of a dragon tainted by the Shade.
Abilities
Pain Suppression | A possible side effect due to his condition, Parnassus can not feel pain as well. Even if one was to burn his skin, his expression doesn't change.
Power/Ability Detection | Instead of sensing emotions, Parnassus can determine a dragon's connection to their deity, how much shade is within them, and their abilities.
