Born as the boy with the shifting scales, Halcyon was always under scrutiny. No dragon in his noble lineage had ever displayed scales that hovered and twisted and vanished in a myriad of patterns, and it was met with some uncertainty by his family. Some of the clan elders assumed he was cursed, while others imagined he was blessed, but to Halcyon, it didn’t matter. He simply enjoyed making up stories from the swirling patterns on his scales, becoming the clan’s youngest, brightest entertainer. Sometimes they were grand tales, often involving him as the shining, armored hero. Other times, they were about a dragon caught in a storm, and he knew with an eerie sense of certainty that she was looking for him. But worst of all, his scales occasionally depicted terrible calamities, such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, and without fail, either his family’s clan or a neighboring clan would suffer from the very disaster shown on his scales. The few dragons that believed his shifting scales to be a blessing were soon of another mind, and just as Halcyon was beginning to come of age, his family locked him away in the wilderness, where he was to remain under constant guard. It seemed that they believed distance would prevent his mysterious scales from bringing further calamity.

Lonelier than ever with only his scales for company, Halcyon grew miserable. The images on his scales that reminded him of blooming flowers and soaring trees were a small comfort, as if trying to tell him that there was something great out there. The patterns that spoke of a wandering dragon, searching for him, began to occur with greater frequency as well, and after enduring nearly a year of imprisonment, Halcyon finally slipped away under the cover of darkness and rushed to the northwest. There, if his scales were to be trusted, he would find solace.

And he did. Deep in the Shrieking Wilds, as his scales began to show only images of the jungle around him, Halcyon met Yavanna and her clan. Drawn to her, he made himself useful in her presence until she finally asked him if he desired to live among her people, an offer he accepted gleefully. Soon, his scales began to show variety again, and he resumed his position as the joyous storyteller, a role that was particularly pleasing to the hatchlings. But still the dragon searching for him appeared in the patterns, and he finally worked up the courage to ask Yavanna for dragons to accompany him on a search. She told him, though, that there was no need, and lo and behold, a Pearlcatcher arrived the next day, looking exhausted and desperate.

And then she rushed to Halcyon and admitted that she had been searching for him for months, seeing him in her waking dreams. Bursting with relief, he swept the stranger up into a tight embrace and admitted the same, never more relieved to know that his scales could not be wrong.

Now, he and Leonora are nearly joined at the hip. She still experiences visions regularly, and shares them with Yavanna only after conferring with Halcyon. Between her prophecies and his scales, they can often deliver complete and accurate predictions for the clan’s well-being, and never once has Yavanna’s clan showed the slightest hostility toward them for their unfailing accuracy in the good and the bad. Living like this is like walking on cloud nine, and Halcyon wouldn’t trade it for the world.
