Iira was born in a small clan named The Desert Rose in the Shifting Expanse. Though relatively small, The Desert Rose had lived in the same territory for longer than anyone could remember and boasted a reputation of honor and integrity. They survived throughout the many years through strict tradition and utter devotion to The Stormcatcher and, to a lesser extent, the other gods. The will of the gods was interpreted and relayed to the clan by a prophet, and during Iira's time with the clan the prophet was a fae named Mituri.

One of the most important duties of the prophet was to perform sacrifices to the gods to appease their anger. While sacrifices could range from small animals to the construction and burning of enormous effigies, on desperate occasions prophets could recommend that a clan member must be sacrifices. Such an occasion occurred soon after Iira was born. Mituri, relatively new to his post, returned from his first visit to the Stormcatcher with a warning that the clan had been cursed with a new hatchling that would bring them misfortune and sorrow. If the clan was to prove it's loyalty to the gods and prevent disaster, the hatchling must be sacrificed. The hatchling in question could only be Iira.

After years of this tradition, The Desert Rose saw the required sacrifice as upsetting but unavoidable. However, Iira's mother tried desperately to save her hatchling's life. She spent six days sitting in the middle of camp, refusing to eat, begging everyone to spare Iira's life, because she had done nothing wrong. Eventually, The Desert Rose came to the conclusion that Iira hadn't exactly done anything specific that could be said to have angered the gods, so if someone else could be sacrificed in her place it would probably be okay. On the sixth day, Iira's mother consented to the trade and allowed herself to be sacrificed.

Almost immediately, the clan's luck changed for the worse. Months of famine and drought were followed by plague, and the large surrounding clans began the eye The Desert Rose's territory greedily. The clan's code of honor prevented them from sacrificing Iira to correct the mistake, as her life had been officially spared, but she grew up with the heavy knowledge that the majority of the clan blamed her for the current state of affairs.

Desperate to prove herself in some way, she threw herself into her studies. She regularly drove herself to exhaustion trying to perform better than the other young dragons in the clan, and while she was never the best in her class she did well. Eventually, when she reached adulthood, the leaders of the clan chose her to train in the ancient style of fighting that was unique to their clan. This was a distinct honor as generally only a few dragons were chosen to learn.

When Iira showed up for her first day of training, however, three members of the clan's guard set on her and tried to drag her to the alter set aside for dragon sacrifices. They forced her to swallow a drug that paralyzed her and were in the process of preparing the sacrifice when a neighboring clan attacked. While the entirety of The Desert Rose was executed, Iira was taken prisoner on a whim. After being kept there for a year, she escaped and by chance was taken in by Clan Aestra-Svi. While she doesn't get along with the majority of the clan, she's found a good friend in Allu and is his most loyal supporter.
