Blood of Hellreek | Intimidation

Bev'ade: Mando'a for 'Child of the Spear', a reference to his teeth

Dajoji was a story among the Valkyrie, what mothers used to scare their hatchlings into training for battle, and into behaving. Lilith was an unnerving whisper among even the high priests, who were curious yet horrified with how the Imperial commanded the forces of the dead with ease, without such a second thought.

So when the word came that offspring was coming to grace their Clan, the Valkyrie was initially unnerved. The dark Mirror, with bright spines and seemingly glowing red eyes, was quiet, and throughout the whole time, had not said a word. Everyone was on edge, and seeing as he was of age in battled years, Kensa decided to test the unnamed dragon in a fight. It was meant to be, simply a test.

An average warrior, a Skydancer who had his claws sharpened, was sent out to face him. The Valkyrie watched as Skydancer and Mirror exchanged blows, the Mirror never once opening his mouth, rearing up instead and using his wings and claws to strike back. But Kensa grew impatient, she knew that within the Mirror, there was some of the restraint, he was holding back- though she knew not from what.

"Fight!" she howled, stamping her paws on the ground. "Your name, the essence of who you are, your belonging in this Clan, depends on this- so fight!"

It was as if something had awoken in him. For the first time since his arrival, the Mirror bared his fangs.

All of them.

Rows of teeth, sharpened to a point, faced the Skydancer, who froze, but quickly recovered in that moment to feint in and try to slice the Mirror's wings. The Mirror quickly reacted, moving to the side and grabbing the Skydancer by his own wings and throwing him down to the ground. More, more, more needed to be done, his mind muttered in a frenzied panic, your name depends on this, and the dragon of Hellreek clamped onto the left wing of the Skydancer with his teeth- and ripped it off, from the base.

The Clan began to murmur aloud, some excited, some with fear, but the general consensus was clear. The Mirror had earned a place in the Valkyrie.

The dragon slowly looked up to the pink tundra, his mouth dripping with blood. It wasn't a challenge, or a beg, as much as it was a question of approval.

"Finish him." Kensa breathed out, and that was all the dragon needed, to tilt his head back, let out a curdling screech, and throw himself upon the near-corpse and rip the throat of the Skydancer out.

He initially thought the roaring noise was from the rush of blood in his head, but after raising his head, he realized that the roaring was a literal roar from the dragons of the Valkyrie. He looked at all of them, feeling a sense of pride of having gained their respect. This was a genuine sort of togetherness, he realized, drinking in their excitement. It was a warped unity, but a unity no less.

"Ni kyr'tayl gai sa'ad." Kensa said, her tongue changing. It was the words of a dragonkind long past, and to his immediate knowledge, he shouldn't have known it, but deep inside, he felt something lock, as a bond, tying him to the Valkyrie. The Clan grows silent, at the words of their leader.

"What have you said?" he managed to say, looking straight into her eyes. She looked back a him, through the skull headdress.

"'I know your name as my son." the red Tundra beside her mother said, directly translating the claim, word for word. "It is the adoption cry of a tongue long past. You are not related to us by blood, but we take you in as our own, as a Clan member, to be taught our ways, if you will accept them. And we give you, your name."

"Bev'ade!" Kensa cried out, amongst the growing roars of the Valkyrie, who welcomed their new companion, chanting his name. "Bev'ade, for you are the son of the spear!"

Bev'ade (pronounced 'Beh-vah-de') was among the spawn of Hellreek, who, unlike many of the dragons who are 'transferred' to the Valkyrie as a hatchling, came to them as a proud adult already.
