Pearl was born of war and strife. Her birth clan burned to the ground in war between two halves of her clan, taking her leader with it. Many of her pack members died in battle. She herself fled, betraying the code of the pack and striking out alone. It was not a wise choice.

Filled with desperation over the death of her leader, the young mirror sought out the Plague Representative of VoltSpire Clan. Tordin was reputed with abilities of the impossible: raising the dead, cursing your foes, enchanting your heart’s greatest desire. But every deal came with a price.

In the end, Pearl broke the bone. She accepted the price for her leader’s life. What toll that would take on reality, though...That remains to be seen.

S T O R Y

The cave was dark and dank, filled with the stench of decay and betrayal. A few bones scattered the entrance, mutated and unidentifiable. Even for a mirror, the place was uncomfortably disease-ridden.

Not for the first time, she pondered going back. Leaving this strange clan and its strange beliefs, and letting herself die in the ashes of her home. Next to her leader, where she was supposed to be. But if both of them could walk of there alive…

It was risky. Even as the pearly mirror padded into the dark, she knew it was risky. This particular dragon she was going to consult had a reputation for shifty deals. Even more, she was native to the Scarred Wasteland, and the Plaguebringer who ruled there. What would she say to going against her deity’s beliefs, defying death to resurrect one long gone?

Yet if anyone could do it, it was Tordin.

A fit of hacking coughs spewed from the pitch dark of the cave, starting the mirror. She stumbled back, only to catch one foot on the remains of something large and dead and fall completely. A low chuckle filled the cave, husky and rough.

Pearl’s extra pair of eyes narrowed, detecting heat where her normal eyes could not. Yes, the heat of a dragon’s form. And a very large form; easily big enough to be a guardian. Creeping closer, the mirror bowed slightly, unsure of what to say.

“What do you seek, traveler? Yes, I know you are not from here. Not this cl-” The larger dragon broke off mid-sentence with the same hacking cough. “Ah. Ahem. I repeat my question? What do you seek?”

The cave fell silent, Pearl scrambling to assemble her request. How did one ask for the impossible?

“Right. Um, yes. I seek your help. My clan leader is dead; I need her alive.”

The guardian coughed some more, though it may have sounded like a laugh to anyone listening closely. Her enormous tail swept across the dry floor, scattering unseen bones.

“A task of the highest caliber! I can do it, but no deal comes without a price.” She shuffled around, finally grabbing a medium-sized bone from the surrounding piles.

“Price?” The incandescent mirror squared her shoulders, struggling to keep the fear from her voice.
“Yes. Give me your life in exchange. A life for a life.” Tordin offered out the bone, but Pearl stepped back.

“No. We both need to be alive!” Now her voice did break, shaking out the last sentence.

“Hmph. Very well. Bring me three sacrifices, then. One for body, one for mind, one for soul. All must be alive. Do we have a deal?” She offered the bone again, and this time the smaller mirror took it. She hesitated, glancing down to where the pearly white object was just barely visible in her talons, the same incandescent color of her hide. Was that a coincidence?

“Yes.” Jaw set, Pearl grasped the bone tightly, and snapped it. Something flooded the air - she couldn’t describe what - and Tordin nodded.

“I expect the sacrifices in two days. Do not delay.”

B I O G R A P H Y

LIt has been many years since Pearl was a dragon. Few survive the ordeals that Pearl has endured, much less keep their sanity. Born in the heat of a war, Pearl never stood a chance to live a normal life. The offspring of two fierce warriors and sister to three caring brothers, Pearl challenged herself to become the strongest. Training and fighting dominated her childhood, under the constant threat of annihilation, survival was of the utmost importance.

For many years, Pearl forged strong bonds with her family, staying always one step ahead of the terrible violence that threatened to consume her life. In her clan, upon achieving adulthood, dragons were to swear an oath. I shall stand by my brothers. I shall stand for my clan. I shall fight with my brothers, I shall fight for my clan. I shall die for my brothers, and I shall die for this clan. I swear. Pearl held the oath with pride, a final symbol of her talent and strength.

For a time, Pearl was happy and content, living with her family and enjoying all that a dragon should know and love. But Pearl was not destined to enjoy such luxuries. In the false safety and enjoyment, Pearl forgot. Pearl forgot to take the step, to look over her shoulder. Pearl forgot. And so, the terrible war caught Pearl in its vile claws, taking everything from her.

On a night like no other, with a moon the color of blood, Pearl’s home was attacked. a rebellion laid siege, making the streets run red with blood. Pearl watched her family die slowly, one by one. A spear, an explosion, fire, nothing spared Pearl’s family. Overwhelmed by her failure to protect her family, Pearl fled. In fear and confusion, she violated her sacred pact, running for the nearby hills, Pearl ran.

Distraught and injured, Pearl hid from the insidious dragons that destroyed her life. She hid in caves, forests, anywhere to stay alive. All the while she blamed herself for the loss of her life, for the deaths of her father, mother and brothers. Inside she could hear each one calling to her, asking her, demanding an answer for why she wasn’t there. Driven mad by her guilt, Pearl searched for something to ease her pain, or better yet: End it.

Pearl soon heard of a dragon named Tordin, who had taken residence in her old clan. It was said that she was a sorcerer with powers beyond comprehension. She could raise the dead, commune with the spirits, some even said she was the child of a god. Others disputed her as nothing but a shady fraud looking to trick a dragon into giving her their gold. However, one of Tordin’s alleged abilities caught Pearl’s ear. Some spoke of her power to bring anyone back from the dead

Pearl immediately began her trek back home, her trek to Tordin. Eventually Pearl arrived at the growing VoltSpire Clan, in which Tordin was the Ambassador for Plague. Accepted, Pearl was allowed to speak her request to Tordin. No one remembered the young mirror who had escaped that night.

When Pearl entered the hall dedicated to Plague, the smell of death and decay was everywhere. Dead set, Pearl shook off the flashes of the night and continued forward. Statues and busts of various warlords and death decorated the sides of the hall, while bone chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, seemingly floating on their own. In the middle of the room was a cracked stone altar, and hunched over the tabernacle was a dragon with scars running along her entire body. Pieces of mold dotted her wings, while bits of flesh hung loose along her torso, revealing pieces of dark red muscle running up to her jaw. As Pearl stopped, the massive dragon turned to face her. Pearl could see the emblem of Plague, etched deep into Tordin’s forehead.

They spoke, and she made a deal, and everything went wrong.

Pearl could never remember what happened, only that she had failed yet again, and that perhaps she was finally paying for her sins. The fall knocked Pearl unconscious, and when she woke, she woke at the gates of an enormous cavern. Pearl looked around, bewildered. Musty red haze spread all around, and Pearl couldn’t see more than a few meters away. Looking for help, Pearl entered a stone temple. To her amazement, several corpses walked around, carrying about random materials and items.

As Pearl staggers about the enormous castle, Tordin’s voice echoed through her head.
“You failed me. Your life is mine, you shall serve me like the rest of the dragons you see before you. When you are not retrieving something for me, you shall remain here. In my personal Hell.”

Pearl’s heart skipped a beat. She tried to think back a message to Tordin, but if she did receive it, there was no response. Pearl continued to wander the halls of that black castle, many months passed before she was finally chosen for a task. Given the choice, Pearl immediately accepted the job, if only to breathe fresh air again. Most dragons would forget themselves in Hell, lost in their own sorrows. But Pearl didn’t. Her resentment for Tordin fueled her desire to remember herself, remember who she was, so that one day she could exact her revenge on the dragon that sent her to this literal hell.

Tordin instructed Pearl to insert herself into a clan, in hopes of obtaining a rare item needed for something, Pearl was not told. Regardless, Pearl was allowed to return to the surface, for however long it took to complete the task required of her. Pearl was sent to various clans for the next years of her tragic life, serving the very dragon that cursed Pearl to eternal damnation.

Eventually Pearl learned of ways to avoid Tordin’s watchful eye, prolonging her excursions bit by bit until Tordin seemed to have all but forgotten of Pearl’s services. Pearl had returned to the place that was once her clan, in which she met Eclipse. An interesting dragon, Eclipse was kind spoken and generous to Pearl, even helping her in times of need.

Eclipse had a curse, known to few as being “Goldcarved”, that slowly transforms a dragon’s entire form into gold. Most did not survive, as the gold prevented movement, ultimately leading to starvation. Seeing one of very, very few dragons who gave Pearl any sort of acknowledgement and kindness, Pearl resolved to cure Eclipse of her curse.

Pearl searched on her travels for methods to cure the Goldcarved curse, venturing far and wide to find the cure. All the while, Eclipse’s condition deteriorated, leaving her wings and legs disfigured with an unnatural golden sheen. When Pearl returned with the cure, Eclipse was on the brink of death, but Pearl was able to save Eclipse from the claws that claimed her family. For the first time ever, Pearl felt like she was worth something.

A beautiful friendship blossomed from Eclipse and Pearl, a bond strengthened by each other’s strengths and weaknesses, the other’s dark and light. Perhaps the only benefit of the Goldcarved curse is that if cured, the victim will quite literally never die. The gold replaces the dragon with gold, and gold cannot age, cannot be scratched, cannot starve, cannot die. Likewise, Pearl’s status as a demon, servant to Tordin gave her similar immunities. Together, forever, Eclipse and Pearl returned to the VoltSpire clan and settled there, living together in the perfect friendship.

However violence still follows Pearl as a vulture follows the lion. War, famine and strife have all afflicted VoltSpire, but Pearl stands to defend it. Always ready for the call to action, Pearl fell into an excessive protection over her clan, stopping at nothing to save any and every dragon within. Praised for her heroics and valor in battle, Pearl has also drawn the eye of several suspicious dragons. One's who suspected her, passing information and secrets of Pearl’s status as a demon.

The title of demon remains on Pearl’s name, tarnishing it like black on white. Some dragons will flee from her at first sight, while others probe and invade her with questions. Questions of her origin, her life, all things that if known, would scare those dragons back to whatever hole they crawled from. Pearl tried to conceal her demon-like state, hiding herself behind clothes and armor, but it is only a matter of time.

Unlike her good friend Eclipse, Pearl remains in the service of Tordin. Though far less frequent, there are times when Pearl must take her leave of VoltSpire for months at a time. Though a lifetime of suffering and torment have riddled Pearl’s life, in rare cases, something valuable can be found in these times of anguish. Sometimes, one might even find a Pearl.
