Kida remembers. Not much, and never for long, but she does. Flashes, behind her eyes, of gunmetal grays and broad crackled wings and mottled scale patterns. The step of warm bodies at her side, trusted, beloved. Impressions of grins, sharp-toothed and more threat than greeting, but not to her. Conversation loud enough she is aware, soft enough she cannot understand, familiar enough to take refuge in. Each worn trinket, glittering accessory and gently-aged shawl fits in her claws and over her shoulders like the curl of the wind and sky itself, beloved in its belonging. Sometimes she catches glimpses of it in reflections throughout the days, all bright eyes and a kind smile and a scarred face beneath sturdy silken fabric. She could grow to know, to understand, maybe even to make it her own again, if she only had the chance. More often, though, comes the forgetting. The voices, toneless and hollow, facets of her own internal dialogue given structure by conversations and events she cannot imagine. Thoughts of touch on her hide makes her recoil, the sensation of comfort an artifact of nonexistent days. Her wings sweep out and knock aside the souvenirs of her old life in purposeful accident. When she sees the mirrors hung in pools of water and glass on the wall, it’s all she can do to tie the strings around her horns and breathe, deep and trembling. Yasmine defeat her in combat, once. It’s one of the few things that doesn’t slip in and out of Kida’s grasp, nowadays. Kida does not know what brought her to Novalis, what carried her before the bright-winged dragon, what spurred her to stay in spite of snapped and snarled venom. She was young, and small, and knew no better until her back met hard earth and her leader forced her to recognize the shape of mercy. Kida does not roar, when she fights. She does not open her mouth beneath her painted mask and let her fangs glint in the light through the trees, does not spread her own wings and beat them as though to blow away her enemies. She just reaches forward and rips apart what enemies there are with her own two hands. She does not like to fight. She does not relish in the spill of blood or the success of defense. It is just fact — to fight is easier than to face the ghosts hanging over her back. She does not know from where she came, but Kida knows this: here in Novalis is better than whatever was before. | xx |

(from "Write for A Dragon Posted Above")
The Guardian's green eyes opened only slightly, taking in the whispering woods around her. Cold blanketed her body, making the small Guardian shiver. Her frame shuddered and tumbled as she used all of her strength to simply stand up. Her wings weighed on her shoulders. She hadn't remembered her wings being this great, nor her claws being this big. Was she not just a hatchling before she awoke? Aware of her vulnerability, small and staring up at everything in awe around her?
She eased into her surroundings as the tremors traveled along her body, while her claws dug into the snow and soil under her in desperation as she used the newfound strength of her further grown body to push her to stand.
She swayed from side to side as she balanced in her "new" body. Icy winds threatened to toss her over, and that's when she really noticed her surroundings. A plethora of high, white mountains gloomed over her from afar, all around her. The tall pine trees failed to conceal them completely, but she quickly attributed that to her size. Her tail curiously turned as she quivered, and began marching forward.
The sheer density of the snow, growing and thickening as she moved forward, threatened her, keeping her claws in place. But she refused to give into the growling white winds and the trees, watching her and towering over her menacingly as she just moved... on... forward.
Finally, the trees seemed to part and the world around her came into view. She looked down at wet feet and small patches of snow. The sky was dark but she looked up to see the mountains covering a sunrise in the near distance. If only to feel the sun, to see its radiance and beauty again, to feel the wind on her wings--
The wind.
Wind... the Guardian looked down at the world before her as she realized she had begun flying. Suddenly, the weight of her wings coursed through her body again. Her head jerked up and she kicked her hindlegs and arms, crying out as she saw the sun rapidly falling to hide behind the mountains again. For a moment, she thought she saw lanterns, green paper lanterns, adorning the sky as smoke snaked its way in with the clouds. She felt tears well in her eyes as her fingers flexed and she reached out,
Cold ice pierced the Guardian's body and wings and black engulfed her.
Kida flexed her wing slightly, wincing as the bandage shifted slightly with her movement. A spiral approached her slowly, looking around with worry and reaching out to touch Kida's wing.
"Did it hurt?"
"No," promised Kida, "It was just sudden. But I can, you know, move it now. Thank you."
"Of course! And if you--"
"I'll be moving on to the next clan now. Thank you for everything."
Kida began to dance her way into an orange shawl, and gripping her mask before the Spiral rested a claw on it.
"L-leaving? Already? But we--"
"I gave you your payment, I respected your policies."
"No, Kida, that's now what I'm speaking of--"
"Goodbye."
Kida snarled and yanked her mask from a small bamboo table. The Spiral looked to the ground and took the rest of her body with her to sulk.
On to the next clan, Kida had promised the Spiral. And on to the next clan she was, as she flexed her wing one last time and closed her eyes to remember the icy winds of two months ago.

Kida, what do you look like under your mask? Can I see?
The guardian regards you and your question for a moment, her green gaze heavy. Then, finally, she says, "very well. If you must know."
She reaches for the stiff material and gently pulls it from her face. Beneath it, her skin is the same grey-streaked blue as the rest of her body. Without the mask to obscure them, the wicked fangs that poke up and down from her gums glint in the light.
When she looks at you again, she avoids your eyes -- or perhaps just her reflection there.
"As you can see," Kida says, her voice just shy of dry, "my face is perfectly normal. I hope this satisfies your curiosity enough."
She re-affixes the mask, then turns and walks away.
