Lore
"Wake up, Dante!" Dante's orange eyes slowly came into focus on a small face. Oh great. Not Volt again. He loved his brother with all his heart...but when he was being woken up in the middle of the night...it was usually not good.
"Noooo. Sleeeeeep." Well, that was intelligent sounding.... "Yuuuusss....staaaars." "Oh, you just want to watch the stars?" "Yeah! For now. Also, I have an idea to discuss." "No." That's what he'd been afraid of. "Oh, come on." "No." It was most likely going to be a totally awesome idea, but he couldn't get involved "Please?" "No." He nearly cracked "You'll love this one, Dante!" "No." Yeah, he probably would, but he would feel terrible if he went along with it. "Dante...." "No." Must. Not. Give. In. "Will you at least look at the stars with me?" "Sure." That he could do with a clear conscience...so he slowly pulled himself up and followed his sporadic brother outside. Protector was out guarding and he glanced at them. "I promise that we will stay out of all manner of trouble, sir." Volt saluted. "I'll believe that when I see humans in our lair." Protector muttered, "Go ahead...." Dante kept silent about the time he heard his father telling his mother about his life as a human. Who would have known? Dante actually kept silent most of the time, except to occasionally try to convince his brother to not go through with one of his terribly hair-brained schemes. "Aren't the stars nice tonight?" "Mhm." Dante thought they were beautiful. He wondered what it would be like to live on one of the stars. Would it be as hot as they said? By they, he meant Sunshine. Sunshine was the clan healer, but he was also very talented in science and alchemy. He said that stars were very far away and very very hot. Dante still wondered. Sometimes he wondered if he would like to learn about the sciences and alchemy. But no one in his clan was suitable for teaching him. Sunshine was definitely a healer, everything else was just a hobby to him. Dante wanted to learn from an expert. As he did with many things, Dante kept that locked inside of him. He didn't know what made him so "closed off" from the other dragons, but he knew he was different. He quietly thought things through before he acted...so unlike Volt. Very unlike Volt. But he loved his brother. It was nice to have someone to do his talking for him on occasion, and Volt was always willing. He had considered telling their friend Cheeto about his dream, but he was a little afraid that Cheeto would tell Volt and Volt would tell Dad and Dad would tell Mom and Mom would get worried. Mom worried a lot. Not over worrying...but still...she worried a lot. Even though they were no longer tiny hatchlings, she worried. But he knew she loved him and his siblings, and he could often see her doing her best not to let her worry make her controlling. "What are you thinking of, so quietly?" Volt asked softly. "Nothing." "Aww, come on, don't lie to me. You know you can tell me anything." Dante shook his head. "Yeah you can." "No." But what if you freak out?" "Are we really going to do this again?" "Yes." I don't want you to feel like I'm leaving you. "Come on, bro!" "No." I don't want to upset you! "Dude, do you really think anything you could be thinking about wouldn't be okay for me to know?" "Yes." This is my secret....and...I'm scared. "Well, don't think that." It was silent, but for the sounds of three dragons breathing. "Dante...what's wrong?" Protector sighed from his guard post. He hated hearing all this bantering. "Nothing." "Then just tell me. I promise I won't get mad." For once, Volt was serious. His pranks were far from his mind and his attention, though usually hard to focus, was fully on his brother. "I want to become a scientist." "Really?" Dante nodded. "An alchemist too?" "Yes, but mostly a scientist." "Well, that's great! I bet that Sunshine could teach you a lot!" Dante sighed. "That's the problem." "What, does he refuse to teach you? I bet I could convince him otherwise... All I'd have to do would be--" "No, Volt." "No?" "Sunshine is a healer...I don't want to be a healer. I want to be a scientist. We have no scientists in our clan. I need to visit other clans to learn science." "Oh." They were silent once more. "Where will you go?" "I don't know yet." "Will you come back?" "Of course." "You know I'm not mad, right?" "Really?" "Yeah. I bet Shadow could give you some tips. She's been to lots of lairs. She might know of a lair you could visit that could help you out." "You're giving me tips??" "If you have to go somewhere, I want to know you're safe and that you'll learn what you want to learn, and that you'll come back." "Of course I'll come back." "I hear something." Protector announced. "Finish your heartfelt conversation inside, I don't know if it's safe." "I bet it's a rabbit," Volt whispered to Dante, who muffled a chuckle. "I heard that." Protector growled. The brother's laughed as the walked back into the clan, and Dante felt a heavy weight slide off of his back. He didn't have to hide his dreams from his family anymore. He knew they would accept him...no matter what. |
