Lore
Teardrop was hatched from an egg devoid of life. His parents laid five eggs...but one was barren. It lay empty...a shell of what it was expected to be. To rap upon the walls of his egg, it would have echoed back in your ears...a plaintive cry, whispering, "I am dead."
Cobalt and Saphira stared at the egg day in and day out, trying to will life into it. Begging it to live. Crying out to every god they knew, to please, please, place life in the hallow shell. But to no avail. The gods listened not.
Sorrow overcame them and they mourned. They mourned for the hatchling they would never know and mourned for the siblings that would never know their brother or sister...because they had left the egg before it could even hatch.
War, their clan leader, told them countless times that it was pointless...they needed to remove the dead egg and move on. They needed to live their lives to the fullest...for their living eggs...for the eggs that still had a chance of hatching.
His request fell upon deaf ears, as Saphira told him, screamed at him, that she would not cast aside the shell of her child. Cobalt tried his best to comfort her...but his heart wasn't in it. He was hurting too.
The grief became too much for the fragile Saphira to bear. She broke. Tears flooded the nest and soaked into the barren egg. It became warm and heavy with her salty tears, but never returned to the coldness of death.
The waters churned within the egg, twisting and turning. The egg rocked back and forth in the nest, threatening to spill out the sides and shatter. But Saphira kept it close. She covered it, and her other eggs with her wings, wondering at the power of her tears.
The egg pulsed with life. It was as if the egg itself, not just the unborn within, was alive. At times, Saphira could swear she heard it humming.
When the time came, and the eggs began hatching, War and Cobalt both warned Saphira, "The egg may not hatch after all. Don't get too hopeful."
But the mother kept hoping. She watched as her children hatched one by one...then at last it was the final egg. It was still. There was no hum. There was no pulse. There was no rocking.
Then...an explosion. Salty water filled the nest and the shell of the egg dissolved in it. And in the midst of the waters, curled into a coil, lay a tiny, very alert spiral male.
He didn't understand the commotion. He didn't understand why so many faces were suddenly poked into his. And he didn't understand why the dragon he instantly knew to call "momma" had waterfalls streaming from her eyes.
But he was filled with a sorrow that could not be explained. A sorrow he would carry with him until his dying breath. A sorrow that enabled him to see deeper. Love deeper. Feel deeper. Formed from the unparalleled sorrow of a mother dragon whose egg would never hatch, Teardrop took her sorrow upon himself.
He grew older and stronger...but although his mother continually loved him and fawned over him, reminding him daily that he was her miracle child, the sorrow weighed too heavily on him. He saw a way out of his clan and to his own place, when a letter came from the parents of a kind, though spastic dragon in his lair, Tori. They were sending her youngest sister to visit, most likely permanently, and live with her...and were wondering if any of the dragons in her clan would care to come visit them. All Teardrop could think was, "Oh, I would, I would!"
"Mother...." He approached her cautiously. "I can't stay here any longer."
"What?" She looked at him with a betrayed, pained, concerned look in her eye.
"There is a clan not far from here, a fire clan, that I want to join. Tori has spoken with me and tells me that it's her home clan...and she speaks very highly of it. Please...let me leave. It's where I need to be, Mother, I feel it in my very bones."
"But you're my miracle, Teardrop...my miracle."
"And I can write home. Maybe even visit sometime. But I need to leave. Please, Mother. This is even the clan where Father grew up. I feel like it's where I need to be. Besides, there's a new hatchling coming. It's Tori's youngest sister. Surely she'll need a kind dragon, such as yourself, to be there for her when Tori is busy. Please...let me go...let me leave."
With a heavy heart, his mother bid him go and went.
He was frightened when he landed outside the new fire clan he was to be a part of. Other dragons might not accept him. They might not like him.
He was greeted by a hatchling named Cheeto, and the two instantly became best friends. He also met Tori's younger siblings, who were only a bit younger than himself.
He soon acquired not only a familiar, but an entire aquarium to care for.
He was formed from the unparalleled sorrow of a mother dragon whose egg would never hatch...but slowly, Teardrop began to learn that it was okay to share his sorrow with others. And Teardrops tears slowly became fewer, and someday...someday his tears will cease.
