Biography

PAPERBARK
The Ingenuity of Spring

Clan Role: Protection Spirit
Mate: None
Pronouns: he/him
Bio: In a grove of birch trees on the edge of Nature's territory, in an area of land hotly contested by various factions of both dragon and beast, there was a terrible fire that ravaged the forest. Everything was reduced to blackened stumps of charcoal, and no life seemed to remain in the area. However, the next spring, a new sprout poked up from the seemingly-dead trunk of one of the birch trees. Once the sprout grew into a full seedling, it broke off from the tree as a spirit in the form of a dragon. Saddened by the destruction around him, the new spirit spread his wings and took off, looking for a more pleasant place.

Unfortunately, his rough, flaky scales and pale complexion struck many dragons he came across as a bad omen, and they shunned him. They believed him to be an omen of death when in fact the truth was the opposite: Paperbark was meant to represent life. From a tragedy, new life will always spring forth. Sadly, it took Paperbark himself years to figure this out. He was naturally drawn to areas of great disaster and tragedy, but he never understood why. He always felt a pull, the desire to do something to help, but he was a shy creature and his reputation didn't make things any easier.

Finally when he could endure it no longer, when he found the site of another fire like the one that had ruined his birthplace, Paperbark knelt on the ground and put his paw to a patch of ruined soil. To his surprise, he saw the green glow of magic, and realized something was changing. When he drew his paw back, there was a new sprout in the soil that should have been ruined for years to come from the fire.

Paperbark is a fairly young tree spirit, still finding his place in the world and discovering his powers. He is shy and will rarely appear to mortal dragons, or even other tree spirits, but he is beloved by the fair folk and finds their presence calming. He is greatly afraid of fire, and if it gets too hot will go into a state of dormancy to protect himself. His known powers are to help the land heal after a great disaster, and also to soothe the hearts of mortals after a personal tragedy as well, though he is still working on learning that.
