Velvet has her mother's tongue, wicked and sharp. Most will tell you that her claws are mere display; it is her tongue you should fear, for it builds up the egos of men only to fuel their destruction. A stranger might call her sweet or soft, a curtain shrouding a knife. She wields her beauty like a sword and it serves her well, for it is rare she establishes a goal that she does not achieve. Above all else, she is resourceful, and knows how to charm any sentient creature into giving her what she wants.

It is this trait, most likely, that drew Neviah to her, and earned her a place amongst the Queen's inner circle. Her duties include reading and writing correspondences on the behalf of her Queen, as well as offering her opinion in regards to policy and occasionally tending to her wardrobe.

Velvet smiles at strangers with her mouth but never with her eyes; that is an intimacy she reserves for her mate and her mate alone. Vesper paints her claws and soothes her tongue, and were she not around, Velvet questions whether she would know of her heart at all.

"She was beautiful, but she was beautiful in the way a forest fire was beautiful: something to be admired from a distance, not up close."

— Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch
