Biography

Brisbane was found as a hatchling during a raid on a Serthis lair in the outer reaches of the scarred wasteland. Most of the dragons in the clan distrust him for this reason.

Smoke and silence. The last of the Serthis clan there lay vanquished at the dragons’ claws, their poisonous blood weeping out in steaming tendrils. The only sounds were the panting of the dragons and the occasional dusting of dirt falling from the ceiling. The still air settled like a cloud over the group, and no one wanted to break the stillness. As their breathing slowed, the cavernous room seemed to whisper, telling secrets that they could not quite comprehend. At last, Warden’s resonant voice broke the silence.
“Good work here, group. Look around, grab what you can carry, and we’ll get out of here. I can’t stand the stench of this place for much longer.” At his command, the Nuevida warriors raised their heads and began to look around, as if for the first time seeing where they were. The echoing main cavern of the Serthis lair, lit only by the faint glow of dying embers, was caked in shadow and the overwhelming smell of poisonous death. It branched off into many narrow tunnels that twisted into darkness, reeking of still air and the faint scent of Serthis. Reluctantly, the small band of dragons spread out, taking cloth, tools, weapons, and whatever else they could salvage, and they were soon ready to depart. “Where is Rylen?” Warden asked as he surveyed the laden group. “For a coatl who spends so much of his time with hatchlings, you’d think he’d want to be around the adults more often.” The dragons murmured in agreement, eager to be out of the foul place.

Click. Click. Click. Click. The young Imperial shivered and shrank back in his cage at the unnatural sound of claws clicking on the floor, worn smooth by the slithering tails of the Serthis. He peered through the darkness, trying in vain to discern whether he was approached by friend or foe. The sounds were getting closer, more hesitant now because of the inky blackness. He heard the rustling of feathered wings, and smelled the faint trace of sweat emitting from the dragon. It also smelled like something else, something.. Comforting, that reminded the Imperial of warmth and fullness. He stepped closer, to the front of the cage, so intent on discerning the smell that he didn’t notice that the clicking had stopped.
“Hello, little one,” said a quiet, soft voice. The little Imperial started with fright and skittered to the back of the cage. “I won’t hurt you.” The voice was melodic and soothing, and he took a few uncertain steps forward. “I’m going to open this now, are you ready?” He didn’t say anything. He hadn’t spoken or heard his own language in so long, had become accustomed to the rough hissing and spitting of the Serthis. The dragon with the voice like warm milk inserted his claw into the lock and skillfully turned it in the pitch blackness, almost like he had done it a thousand times before. The cage swung open on rusted hinges, creaking in protest. “Come with me,” said the voice. “I will take you home.”
