There are many dangers that beset the dragons of Sornieth. The Shade, Beastclans, Emperors... Most clans find themselves in battle at some point. Even the deities must fight, bolstering their ranks with those dragons trained as warriors and then exalted in their name. A young Ridgeback was just such a one, a long time ago. A drawn-out battle, one that had exhausted the ranks of all the troops, had ended and then begun again when the dead on the field spawned a massive emperor. It wrought so much destruction that the deities descended on the field themselves to fight it, calling for the clans to send one last wave of exaltees as reinforcements. The dragons sent were barely trained, green and untested, all that was left.

He was not named, at that time. There had been no time for a naming ceremony, and it was considered auspicious that an exalted dragon let the deity they would serve name them. There was no time for such niceties now, either. The army he traveled with was inexperienced, fearing defeat before they even stepped onto the battlefield. When they saw it, and the massive Emperor that the Flamecaller struggled to hold back, many of them would have fled then and there, abandoning their duty. But a single unnamed Ridgeback stood up before them, his battered armor seeming to take on a heroic shine, his fiery wings spread like banners, and rallied them. When he spoke, they saw determination in his eyes, and his words lit a fire in them. He led their small army into battle that day, and to victory.

Afterward, the Flamecaller looked over the tired warriors, inexperienced and afraid no longer, who had been dedicated into her service. To each of them she granted a name to take pride in, that spoke of the fire in their hearts and the bravery they had displayed. Pausing, at last, on the nameless Ridgeback, she bestowed the name of Phenex, one who had rose from the ashes, and stirred what had seemed burnt out and dead into a renewed fire of victory. In thanks for his service, the Flamecaller crowned him in golden laurels. She had a place for Phenex, she told him, but not among the ranks of the exalted. Not yet. The Ashfall Waste had need of a commander like him, and there was one clan in particular who would put his skills to their best use in the region's protection...

The unnamed clan who lives in a lair hidden deep in the Ashfall Waste is, for the most part, a clan of spies and assassins, one who does covert work rather than overt. But when a battle must be waged, their intelligence-gathering comes into play more than ever. They are the ones who know exactly when and where their forces should gather and just what strategies they should employ for the best use of their resources, and the highest possibility of victory. And when there must be a battle, they bring with them a commander in gleaming gold armor, crowned with victory laurels, whose words rally the most tired of armies, and whose strategies pull victory from the jaws of defeat.
