B I O G R A P H Y

Jakam and his sister were the first hatchlings to be born in the Fletching Clan in nearly two years, but it was not a happy occasion all around.

Tarach had been full of venom and sadness for months after Akula’s death, and refused to take another mate until the clan was introduced to its first ridgeback--Vika. The proud dragoness reminded Tarach of Akula’s wild spirit, and she seduced him gladly. When their hatchlings grew feeble and died, however, Tarach flew into a fit of mad sorrow and shut Vika out of the palace he had built, tearing down decorations and insisting that the clan was doomed to fail.

Kimian, Tarach’s closest friend and advisor, took pity on Vika--for she, too, was mourning the loss of her children--and in secret hid her in the castle’s lower floors. In time, Vika fell for the spiral, and the two had another nest of two eggs. Vika took care to protect the hatchlings, and Kimian harvested medicines and brought warm blankets for his mate and children. In the end, one still passed, but their surviving child grew up glad and wily.

It was eventually necessary to reveal Jubal and Vika’s presence to Tarach. The fae’s fury was overtaken by his despair, and he turned away from his friend and ceased to exercise his authority in the clan, saying that it had no sway among the members in any case. Kimian would not let the melancholy of the fae keep him away from his friend, and continued to advise the patriarch and stay by his side despite the note of aggression that had crept into Tarach’s dealings with him.

Jubal was taken to wanderlust, much to his mother’s dismay--but one day, returning from his travels with him was a mate, already carrying four eggs. Vika and Kimian both rejoiced, and set the two up in the castle’s dusty hatchery. The hatchlings would have survived, all, if it were not for Tsoriken the Rebel. The skydancer spirited away the two pearlcatchers of the nest as sacrifice to a necromancer. The Fletching Clan had no idea of his actions, however, and welcomed him as a hero when he ‘caught’ the necromancer, whom he blamed for the hatchlings’ deaths. Tsoriken became one of the most beloved dragons in the clan, especially admired by Jubal’s two surviving children--Jakam and Ivy.

When Jubal’s mate disappeared, the spiral did not mourn for too long, but he could not bear to stay in the Fletching Clan with his children, so he left them with their grandfather and fled. Kimian, old as he was, tried his best to care for the energetic little spirals. Luckily for him, Ivy, the eldest of the nest, had inherited his wits and level head. She reigned in her brother, the youngest, and kept him out of trouble as much as she could.

Jakam and Ivy are as close as siblings can be, having survived abandonment by their parents and betrayal by Tsoriken. They kept each other company during the dark days of the Fletching Clan before Akula’s resurrection. Jakam scrutinized Ivy’s mate Sylvan for a good month before he allowed his sister any time alone with the imperial--at least, he thought.

In truth, Jakam is a little clumsy and less than clever, but what he lacks in wit he makes up for in loyalty and humor. He spent his whole life training to become a warrior and finally earned his place among the Fletching Clan fighters shortly before the civil war began. Out of necessity at that time, he became the exalter, caring for warriors and travelers expiring with wounds inflicted by Tsoriken and his cohorts. This took a toll on Jakam’s psyche, but he remains mischievous, while privately his mate Sakine knows he has nightmares of the faces of those he has had to bear to the Windsinger. He continues to fight for his clan and his sister as fiercely as the other surviving warriors.

Jakam has found his calling as the clan's exalter. Over the years he has grown more and more wraith-like in his grief. Mate after mate has left him or passed on until Jakam feels that perhaps he was meant to be alone in life. He has taken more than one loved one to the Windsinger himself, and having experienced the grief does not wish the burden upon any others.

He met Henalee when the Fletching Clan was taken in by her during the Fey Calamity. During that time, he was one of the busiest dragons in the clan, exalting dozens and even hundreds of dragons to the Windsinger to ease their pain, including two of Queen Amdiffyn's children. Henalee helped to ease his guilt, and the two eventually became mates. Read the story in her bio.

Sweet curling plumes of incense serve not to veil his salt-bitter tears, shed only in aching solitude. His burden to bear, his, even as it bends him brittle-boned and weary, even should he break. Go on with honor. They go with more than that, each soul shearing fragments from him. He fades in increments, and oh, if they only took—but they give generously, a burdensome bounty of guilt and of blame. Help me. It hurts. Don’t make me go—their ghosts whisper, ever-after, as if to deny him the peace he purports to grant, to render him as much a wraith as them. Limned in low lantern-light, shadow among shadows, can he claim otherwise?
