Before Claws tearing. Teeth piercing. Flames burning. His and others. That's all there was. That's all there had ever been. Or so it seemed. Life outside of this day, of this battlefield, felt like a distant dream that was only half remembered. But he couldn't think of anything he wanted more. It was why he was fighting. It wasn't why he started, of course it wasn't. Battles like this started for the noblest of causes. He had believed in it in the beginning. They all had. But that was before. Before the taste of blood sat like a permanent coat on his tongue. Before his throat was scalded from breathing flames more often than air. Before his hide had been torn to shreds and pieces belonging to others dangled from his claws. Now he could barely remember why they had come here. He doubted his companions did either. Now they all fought with a single thought in mind: S U R V I V E. And to do that, not everyone could. Someone grabbed onto his back, digging into the already open wounds there. He howled in pain and rage, twisting around to reach them. His own claws latched onto their face. He felt a claw sink into an eye, a scream of rage confirming. He tossed the other to the side and threw himself forward. If he kept moving then maybe... Again, there was a weight on his back. This time he hit the ground hard, the air knocked out of him. Even as he gasped for breath, he turned his head, flames already gathering at the back of his throat. Then he froze. He knew this dragon. This wasn't an enemy. This was-- He didn't have time to finish the thought. He felt a hand grab onto one of his antlers and then his head slammed against the ground, something sharp digging into the side of his face. A sickening crack echoed through his head, soon replaced by a dull ringing as his vision blurred and spun. The weight of the other vanished but he couldn't find the strength to get to his feet. The sounds of the battle raging around him seemed very far away and for a moment he wondered if he was dying. Someone began dragging him and he became painfully aware that he was not, in fact, dead. Dirt and rocks scraped and dug into wounds, pain dancing across his hide like fire. It didn't last long. There were too many dragons, too much happening for much progress to be made. But the other didn't seem concerned. He lifted his head weakly, blinking blood from his eyes. What was to happen to him? It was something he would never know, for as soon as his head was in the air, someone--a second dragon--shoved it back down and this time the darkness consumed him. |
