Bane was found at the heights of the Twisting Crescendo, waiting to die.
Across travels, he was picked up and taken back to a particular clan in the Southern Icefields.
Ice... ice was something he'd never liked. His parents, whom he knew little about, were always telling him to stay away from the Icewarden... he could remember bits and pieces, like the family farm and whatnot. Only one thing he liked to do came from his family- gardening. Even though he disliked the clan and its Father with a passion, he would always go out foraging for new seeds- sometimes he even accompanied the Travelmasters to the marketplace to buy new, prettier flowers.
He'd plant them anywhere- on top of the cliffs they called home, or even in the halls of the tunneled- out lair. It added some vibrance to the lair, or so the other dragons said. He had a decent life with the dragons that sheltered him... at least for a while.
It was four years later, where he'd befriended an adolescent Guardian named 'Amaranth' for his peculiar coloring.
The dragonet would keep coming to his side, foraging around the lair with him and tending to flowers he always seemed to forget. Amaranth would listen to him- not many dragons did that.
Then, out of the blue, the Wendigoes came.
They stripped Bane of his life. They took his voice. His scales. His one and only friend. They killed so many of the lair, yet spared him.
They spared him to see him suffer.
Some of the lair inhabitants blamed him. They spit at him, at his... deformed appearance.
The Wendigoes had cursed him to turn into a dragon of stone.
He listened to their taunts and leers, all while a horrible numbness took over his body. Numerous times he'd been cast out to sleep in the cold, where his creaking stone bones could crack open and frost over. He was an outcast... harbinger of Glacies Ventus's ill sorrow. He was the reason they were gone.
He and his love were the reason everything was wrong.
Omens soon forced the clan out of their home. They flew northeast to his previous settlement of the Wind Flight.
He couldn't follow.
He waited for weeks, for someone perhaps to show up... some slim chance that someone would care enough for him. His bones and skin were leaving him stiff and rigid. He could withstand the ice, alright...
He couldn't be touched, and he hated it.
In dying thirst and hunger, Bane dragged himself to the edge of the Frigid Floes. He was dying... he couldn't convince himself to try and fly with stonebound wings.
That was where the lady Ridgeback, Centenis, came in with cold eyes and a cold heart.
She was broken, in the same way he was...
Neither of them were wanted.
They homed in the ice for days, waiting for Bane to get over whatever illness had gotten past the stone heart he carried. They were soon after discovered by his old gardening friend... well, one of his 'students' early on... what was his name? Snatty? Smatter? Who cared. The Pearlcatcher from the clan of his seething hatred took them back, where he was greeted by countless new faces who welcomed him back. None of the sneering, awful dragons who inhabited the ice masses... friendly dragons who roamed among the weeds and bonsai trees of the Zephyr Steppes.
Mages living around the area were able to stop the curse, yet not remove it- Bane refrains from talking due to scaring dragons. His mouth and claws are stiff and unmoving- Radiant and Tidepool crafted a strange gadget allowing his jaw to hinge, letting him eat, yet it's still unnatural when he tries to converse. He's rarely seen talking to anyone anymore- that is, besides Adventure and his accomplice, Smarties. Adventure was that little pink dragon's brother... Amaranth. Bane still tells the rust Guardian stories about the younger one, and enjoys doing so.
He was able to resume his activities as a gardener, with the Windsinger willing to allow him freedom to plant wind- grown or sold seeds.
Nowadays, he's taken Centenis as his mate- however, they, seem to have a curse on their hatchlings as well, as every one seems to turn to stone on the sixth hatching day. Their two remaining children, a son and daughter, were sent to their daughter clan, Aurum Vintae. They write regularly, which adds a bit of light to his light.
Though he still loathes himself, maybe, maybe one day he'll be able to forgive what he did.
