Grey and her brother, Spinel, were pushed out of the nest very young. Their clan encouraged exploration and freedom for hatchlings to do as they like; their parents didn't really pay much attention to them. Grey wasn't all that comfortable with this, preferring to stay close to the other hatchlings and tagging along with her mother.

The one day she did decide to follow Spinel on one of his quests to almost get himself killed, they met Castor, and Imperial dragon. Grey immediately wanted to go back home, intimidated by this giant. Spinel took to him right away, and decided that his destiny wasn't where they were at the moment. After hours of persuasion and sweet-talking, he convinced Grey to come with him to wherever Castor was going. She misses home terribly and wants to make new friends but is too afraid of making a bad first impression.
