Crystal structures of some forms of water ice
Ice IX (ice-nine) is a form that water can solidify to under the right temperature and pressure constraints, under 140 degrees Kelvin and under pressure of 200 and 400 MPa. It forms a tetragonal crystal matrix.
In Cat's Cradle the formation of this type ice caused all water on Earth to freeze, ending life as we know it. Thankfully this will not happen, according to the current laws of physics and thermodynamics.
Water ice is very strange, since most materials can only crystalize in a couple of different ways at most. Water ice has eighteen different crystalline structures and there are likely more yet to be discovered at even more extreme temperature and pressures. This is due to water's high polarity and hydrogen bonding. Ice Ih (ice-one-h) is the form almost unanimously seen on Earth, though some ice Ic (ice-one-c) does occur in the upper atmosphere.
Ice IX is a surprisingly calm spiral dragon. Perhaps it is because of her icy birth, but she doesn't excessively chatter or fidget about like most of her breed. Living in the Ashfall Waste might seem impossible for such a cold-aligned dragon, but thankfully her magic is more than strong enough to keep her cool.
She'll even help out around the forges with quenching by freezing the metal with her power. Such rapid cooling is used to harden steel by adding other metals to it, like nickel or by encouraging special crystallization like martensite or even prevent crystallization entirely to create an amorphous metal. Amorphous metal alloys are important for bone replacement and screws to help heal fractures, along with being used in electrical transformers that are becoming increasingly exported to the Shifting Expanse.
