Sparrow Skull

across the soft earth,
a line beckons you
to get up and follow

to the reaper,
no; a farmer
with his lands hollow

he drags his scythe
he works the land
the skies too, and the sea

his hand in yours
a careful touch—
but it's better to be

and yet, up close
the reaper asks
"why do you not fear?"

you smile back
and close your eyes
"the reaper is not near"
if you find bones in the forest, sit a bit and listen. they are old and have some good stories to tell. maybe they’ll teach you a spell or two, or explain where the water on our planet came from. if you find bones by the ocean, run. don’t look back. run, faster, faster. the sea may love you but there are nights where she knows neither mercy nor science, and the bones warn you only once.

Export bustled around his well-decorated studio, his wings twitching whenever he stopped for even a moment. A soft draft swept through the room occasionally, taking away any stuffy toxious air that lingered in the room. It was a clever feat of Wind engineering that he had specially requested. Still air brought back bad memories. Around him, embalming chemicals lined the shelves, as well as many tomes of funeral rights for all manners of services to the dead. Although much of the stuff held practical use, some knick-knacks had their place as well; By the door the graveyard’s polished key hang on a leather strap, and on a window sill sat a pot with a small posy of fragrant flowers- one of the few living decorations he actually enjoyed having around.

Export weaved around the central table, cleaning as he went. He picked up a fancifully etched tome; one with leather and silver engravings, etching out thin-lined old script. It was one he had just read recently, and he puffed a forceful breath across the cover despite there being no dust to blow away.

This particular book held a variety of rituals for those given to the sea- from ways to allow the dragon’s body to hold together under the tide, to formulas for environmentally-safe compounds that allowed one’s body to melt away and become one with the blue waters. He placed the book back into its correct place on the counter, and tapped it gently on the spine to rotate it into perfect alignment. It was a newer addition, traded for when Past Echoes opened its doors up to travellers of all flights. Export then stepped away to observe the other tomes, both worn thin from decades of use.

One was an old bleached volume on the way of cremation. Thick golden thread marked out traces of a sun as well as what appeared to be The Beacon of the Radiant Eye. This book hadn’t been pulled out in some while, and a small coat of dust sprayed into the air as Export carefully blew it away.

Next to it was another book, thinner than the others. The cover appeared to be tanned goatskin, and any details that were perhaps on it on some point were worn away completely. Wrinkled parchment stuck out from the cover, the paper slightly too big for how shrunken the aged hide had become. This particular book he had not read in some time, having practically memorized the many parts of the practice of burying those who worshipped the Earthshaker. Past Echoes had been a clan under The First God since their formation.

Outside, the sun had begun setting on the temple. The old oak door of his room creaked open to reveal a Skydancer’s head. Litsrik. She often sang at the funerals he took care of.They rarely spoke, or rather Export rarely spoke to her, but over the years they had become close to friends. Export nodded at the skydancer, knowing that his friend had come to remind of of his graveyard shift tonight. The night would be a dark one,. By the phase of the moon, he was sure that malevolent spirits and ghouls would come, hoping to feast on the remains of those buried in the earth if given the chance. It was to be another long dark.

The corners of creation
are a blanket softly spread
over waters, wisps, and whip-poor-wills
and quiet, sleepy heads.
O slumbering stuff, the time has come
to walk the world instead.
Know the sleepers, love them well,
and guard them in their beds.
