 ________ ______ While Amklis is enthused about proving his worth and rising in rank, an order from anyone superior is absolute, however he may sometimes resent it. It is most fortunate that it is so, for his stubbornness and impetuousness when left to his own devices could easily lead to trouble otherwise. Something of a vain creature, Amklis also invests personal funds in attiring himself to his desires. The loss of his accoutrements would be mortifying. As is considered the Wildclaw way, Amklis does not allow insult to go unanswered, unless the offender has the rank to pull. With the exception of a superior's veto, the Wildclaw's word is his bond. Amklis has been known to bring lost eggs home, to ensure they have a chance of a future. There are those, considered bullies, who purposefully pick fights over fabricated trivialities with those weaker than them in order to force the more honourable victim to participate in a duel. The bullies leech rank off their victims as a result. Amklis sees such practice as shameful and, when he may, prefers to challenge those bullies in order that their rank should reflect their true worth. Rank, in his eyes, being a reflection in one's ability to contribute to the clan. The Wildclaw sees the stories accrued over the life of an individual, their experiences, as precious things to be remembered. Given that creating pieces to commemorate events in the lives of members is a job commonly assigned to those more lowly ranked, Amklis respects, rather than disdains, those tasked with such work.

Amklis's clan take the name from where they live: the Boiling Bog. A place with many legends attributed to it. The clan is, however, split regarding beliefs on its history. The piously-inclined believe that they are the descendants of a line of priests who carried out religious ceremonies in the bog. Those more inclined to the warrior's way believe that the clan's inherited tradition is that of warriors, their forebears being renowned for their martial prowess. As a result, two sets of nomenclatures are in use. From highest to lowest, the classes that comprise the clan are called: marshal/venerated, brigadier/honourable, chief/novice, pouncer/commoner. Amklis is known to be less than piously-inclined for his part. He sees the emphasis as being on everyone's duty to the clan as a whole. Like many Wildclaw-dominated societies, opportunities to climb ranks appear throughout the year, but the biggest events of the year are what the pious call the rites, and the warriors call the trials. They occur during every Riot of Rot and Greenskeeper Gathering. Half of the marshals plan and judge at a time, while the other half competes. This cycles. Those in esteemable positions are expected to regularly prove they are worthy, whereas those more lower ranked may take the opportunity to show how far they've come since the last trials. It is the standard coming of age practice for members to participate in for the first time in the trials soonest after they come of age. It is there that the marshals determine where in the hierarchy they begin their adult life. While the two major factions within the clan may show displeasure towards one another, virtually all take pride in the trials. The trials are intended to test mind and body, and reward those best able to contribute to the good of the clan. In the clan of the Boiling Bog, it is the custom that personal beautification denotes rank: the more heavily patterned the dragon, the greater their achievements. Spending personal funds on apparel is freely permitted, though some individuals disapprove of any dressing in a fashion that could be suggested to contradict what might be expected of their position. Whether it's a pouncer wearing complete sets of sylvan and lace, or a marshal wearing moth-eaten scarves. As far as inter-clan relations go, it is the standard practice of the Boiling Bog clan and their neighbours to exchange gifts; tokens of respect to foster peaceful relations. |
