Biography

JAVELIN

The devil's advocate
title_divider.png

As a young dragon, Javelin constantly found himself at the center of arguments. Before long he became known as an instigator. Even his parents grew frustrated with him, though they tried to afford him more patience than the rest of the clan. Perhaps he was too young to realize what was happening, but all he could see was the disdain everyone had for him. He could hardly understand why; no matter the situation he tried his hardest to resolve each conflict that arose but it was all to no avail. Any dragon that took the time to interact with him grew too frustrated to listen to a word he said, even if they were well intentioned.

At last, even Javelin's own patience was gone. He began to feel a certain sense of self loathing and took to isolating himself. These acts of isolation were due to the small shred of his true identity that remained. His self perception was now informed only by the opinions of others. The Tundra who had been born with an innate love and appreciation for the companies of others had become less than a shadow of his former self now that he could only see the conflict he caused. The longer he kept to himself, the quieter he became, and the more he realized that he had grown to be a burden on his clan. This knowledge coupled with the memories of the arguments he had caused in the past and tension that still surrounded his presence, he left in the still of the night.

For a brief time, he travelled around Sornieth, a foolish part of him hoping against hope that he might encounter a dragon whom he could befriend. As fate would have it he left only enemies in his wake….

It should come as no surprise that Javelin began to avoid even strangers, turning tail as soon as the scent of another reached him on the wind. Eventually he settled himself in a small, uninhabited cave in the Carrion Canyon of the Shifting Expanse, taking a grim sense of satisfaction in the relative isolation it provided him. Few dragons made their homes here, and those who did spent little of their time in the canyon. And yet, he still managed to attract the attention of a particularly curious Pearlcatcher. Several time he saw her in the distance. The first time she approached him he snarled and bared his fangs at her, enraged that she was foolish enough to come near. The jade dragon hesitated then and only pursued him again when he turned tail and returned to his cramped cave.

Maybe this Pearlcatcher, Jarla, knew the Tundra before her could scarcely harm an ember mouse, let alone another dragon. Whatever it was, her curious nature overrode the caution that would normally have held her back. As she approached him Javelin's eyes strayed to the dull, lack-luster pearl encircled by her tail. Her own eyes, blood red, observed the droop of his wings, the sadness and anger in his eyes. An idea struck her then, as they always seemed to do out of the blue, and it was perhaps more ludicrous than any of the others she had come up with in the past.

She did not speak as Javelin watched her place her pearl on the ground before him. Unlike most of the pearls he had seen, it was not a perfect sphere, if anything it looked more like a rock found at the bottom of a riverbed, the rough edges worn down by the passage of water and time. It was certainly round, but not perfect. When he finally drew his eyes away from the pearl and back to the dragon before him, she was miming something, but what? She made to place her foot into the dust and then gently placed it on the surface of her pearl. Before Javelin realized what was happening, a thick, sticky black puddle was on the ground in front of him.

Jarla settled back on her haunches, looking at Javelin expectantly with her head slightly cocked. He merely stared at her with his eyebrows drawn together in confusion. When it was apparent that her patience would outlast him he rose to his feet and resettled himself with his back to the entrance of the cave. In response, Jarla snorted and turned tail, sprinting away before spreading her wings and taking flight. Javelin sighed and laid his head on the ground. Good riddance he thought to himself before closing his eyes in preparation for sleep. But as he lay there, he felt frustrated with himself for that thought, for he knew it was not true.

When he woke the next morning and turned to leave the cave, he stepped right into the pool of mucus from the previous afternoon. He stared down at his now dripping talons before realizing in shock that the pearl was still there, waiting, in exactly the same place as it had been. Gently he pressed his foot against the pearl, and as he removed his foot from it's surface a sadness gripped him for what might have been….

Javelin spent the day reflecting on the past, slowly chipping away at the hard exterior that he had inexorably built up around himself. He reimagined a thousand scenarios, agonizing over how they might have been different. Caught up in his thoughts, he didn't realize that he was expecting the pearl to be there when he returned later that day and was caught off guard by the overwhelming sense of disappointment that crashed down on him when he saw it was gone. After hours of indecision the Tundra left his cave as the sky began to darken far above. Her scent still lingered on the mucus that had dried to offer it's sheen to the parched ground beneath it. As he let the scent fill his nose, hope flooded through him to his wingtips and the end of his tail.

After several days of searching, the Pearlcatcher's scent was beginning to grow stronger, as was Javelin's old identity. At the end of the third day, when the moon had already risen high in the sky, Javelin lie down next to a cactus that looked as though the Stormcatcher had taken his frustration out on it and slept. When he opened his eyes the net morning his heart began to pound out a beat that would rival even the fastest of mirrors. Instinctually he leaped to his feet and away from the red eyes that had greeted him upon awakening before they struck a chord in his memory. It was her. As her scent reached him, a smile appeared unbidden on his face. Jarla closed the gap between them, aware of the change in his demeanor and as her snout neared his, she snorted as she had done at the end of their last encounter. With a wink she flicked her tongue against his cheek and took flight, heading for a precipice in the distance. Without a second thought Javelin followed her.

The Pearlcatcher was surprisingly fast, and he had lost sight of her in no time at all. But her scent guided him onward, and he was so focused on finding her that he paid no mind to the many other scents that began to mingle with hers as he entered a warren of caves that lead him into the depths of the Shifting Expanse. The cave he had entered quickly narrowed into a tunnel, lit sparsely by Kunzite embedded in the stone walls and ceilings. Javelin was only faintly aware of the steadily decline that the tunnel was following, his nose was guiding him now. At last the tunnel began to widen again and a number of steps later a large cavern was before him. A rush of air tugged at his fur as several airborne dragons crossed the breadth of the cavern. For a brief moment Javelin was filled with awe at the sight of what was clearly a lair housed miles beneath the surface of the Shifting Expanse.

His awe and appreciation for the lair's construction vanished as the doubt that he had lived with for so long began to creep up on him. Automatically he began to back away, intending to return to the surface and leave the lair behind. Another gust of air swept over him then and he feared he had been discovered before he could leave unnoticed when he felt someone settle on the cool ground next to him. "I should have known it would be no fun to play hide-and-seek with a Tundra." Javelin looked to his left and felt the tension that had been gripping him ease slightly. "What do I smell like, anyway?" He watched in silence as Jarla brought her tail to her nose, inhaling deeply as its tufted end neared her snout. With a smirk she released it and began to flick it against his own tail. "So, what do you think, welcome home? Sure beats your poor excuse for a lair." title_divider.pngThough it took time for Javelin to come to accept the clan's lair as his new home, each day lessened the anxiety he felt at becoming part of a new clan. Despite her quirks her found Jarla's presence soothing and felt strangely at ease around her. As he began to interact with his new clan-mates, he was at first dismayed to see that history was repeating itself. Though Jarla was an exception, it seemed that everyone he tried to become acquainted with left on a bitter note. The small sense of happiness he had felt upon finding a new home was quickly fading. What was it about him that led so many dragons to argue with him? Though it saddened him to leave Jarla, Javelin resolved to leave before his feelings for her grew any more, knowing that it would be easier to break their bond now. Yet, before he could take his leave, he was approached by Rundas, the clan's oldest Skydancer. The two had never spoken before, and Javelin fully intended to bypass the other male without comment.

The icey Skydancer threw out a wing to stop Javelin in his path. "I've been watching you. Since you arrived. I grew tired with solving problems and mediating disputes long before I left my home in the Southern Icefields, but that doesn't mean I'm not a Skydancer anymore. Before you leave us, realize that you have been born with something of a curse. You're a bit of a devil's advocate whether you intend to be or not. When dragons look upon you, you stir their emotions and provoke conflict. The energy that surrounds you takes on the energy opposite their own, and though you try to be engaging, all of your own stances become contrary to their own. You create conflict wherever you go, and I can see the effect it has. But, again, before you leave, consider this: This does not have to be a curse, you can turn it into a gift, a blessing for others. You have the desire and strength inside you. Showing another a point of view that they inherently disagree with can provoke great change in those who desire it."

Rundas left him then to ponder what his words. Javelin sat alone, apart from even Jarla for many days as he considered what the Skydancer had said. At long last when he had thought on everything that had been said, and the implications it had with regard to his past, present and the future, he decided upon a course of action.

Though he knew it would be difficult, Javelin resolved to train and discipline himself with those Skydancers who were a part of his new clan. Perhaps if he could learn to better control his emotions, Rundas was right. Perhaps he could be an agent of change for those who might seek it. Only time and dedication would tell….
