There is an old cautionary tale that dragons tell to their young, of an arrogant young dragon who had been a talented mage with great promise. One day, in an attempt to perform a powerful feat, unheard of for its demand of magic strength and skill, the dragon either angered the gods with his impudence and lack of respect, or overdrew his own magic strength. Either way, he became a nifrit, a creature made of nothing but pure magical energy. Many of the Duronne Clan thought nothing more of the story than they would have of any of legend. That is, until they encountered Finrae. An unstable being of pure energy still tangled in the solid body of a dragon, it seems that Finrae is the living- if you could call him alive- proof nifrits are more than cautionary tales, although something must have happened before Finrae could fully turn into a nifrit. Mute, he relies on his familiar- a loathesome and untrustworthy spirit- to speak for him, although many doubt its reliability. It has been caught several times lying without the slightest hesitation, and when confronted, it merely laughs in its hissing, wheezy voice. Its various explanations for Finrae's state are all equally colourful- the result of a curse it put on him, the backfiring of a spell- who knows? Hasamelis was initially determined to keep Finrae as far away from the clan as possible, perceiving him as a threat. His fears were not entirely unfounded, as Finrae's mood swung wildly between confusion and sheer exhileration, and he seemed to hold very little regard for the others' safety at times. After a quick consultation with both Circles, it was unanimously agreed to bar Finrae from entering the clan. However, it was at this time that Aevitas decided to stir from his lethargy, and stated that Finrae should be allowed. Worried that the old Guardian had only said so in an attempt to increase the clan's number, Hasamelis argued passionately against Aevitas, but the old clan leader remained resolute- his word was, after all, law. For a brief moment, it appeared as though the clan was once again on the brink of separating- but between the two clan leaders and their ways. Eventually, for fear of shattering the clan yet again, Hasamelis backed down, on the condition that the very moment Finrae became a threat, he would be exiled. A difficult and dangerous dragon to understand at the best of times, he is given a wide berth by the rest of his clan mates. |
