"I’m not going to give up "

Fawn had lived on Soteria for a long time. She liked it there, it was pretty and the weather never seemed to get all that hot or deadly cold. It was a perfect place to live. The island kept them safe.
Yet she really didn’t feel like she fit in.

Opal, Rirasul and Nidalee kept to themselves, always watching over the clan yet never getting terribly close with anyone but themselves. Charoite was near inapproachable, despite Fawn’s attempts to be friendly, and Alise was a bit too ‘out there’ for there to be any real friendship between the two young imperials.

Even Gwen and Bayanar were hard to spend time with. Gwen was almost always underwater, and Fawn despised the idea of getting her wings wet. Bayanar was pleasant to talk to, on a day that he was in a good mood, and if he wasn’t there was no hope in even attempting conversation.

On an on it went, with Fawn attempting to find her true place within the Soterians. After a while, it became disconcerting. She wanted to give up. There seemed to be no hope, and yet Fawn could not find it in her heart to leave.

Then it happened. It was a cold winter day, and the wind was blowing from the south, brining even colder snowy winds from the Southern Icefield. Fawn was shivering in her den, unmotivated to get outside and move around to warm up. It had been a really miserable week.
Just when Fawn was about to throw another blanket over herself, there came the sound of a horn. It was something that young Timbren had suggested when a large influx of dragons had started showing up unexpectedly, as a way to let the clan know of a visitor.

Grudgingly, Fawn made her way outside to the gathering space. Despite it hardly being a rare occurrence, the entire clan was already gathered, muttering excitedly.

After a few moments, Silas and his mate came into view, leading the most handsome imperial Fawn had ever seen. She moved forward, pushing to the front of the crowd to get a better look as they landed. The dragon was introducing himself, head bowed low in respect to the three founders.

“My name is Sefnir, I hail from the Snowsqual, and…” He turned his head this way in that, before his gaze landed on Fawn. “…and I’m here for Fawn.”

Needless to say, the next few days were a bit confusing. Sefnir explained how the island had summoned him, guiding him to her so that they might meet. He hadn’t even the faintest idea why, but Soteria was terribly insistent, and felt like someone terribly kind. So he had listened.
After hearing that, Fawn was elated. The island takes care of its dragons.

So the two of them began to foster a friendship, and Soteria was overjoyed that she had found a companion for Fawn…until things began to take a turn for the worse. The island began to panic as Fawn and Sefnir showed signs of caring for each other in a way that was definitely not allowed.

Two dragons that are related, even in the most distant of ways, could not be allowed to be together in that way. The panic Soteria was feeling showed in the weather. Snowstorms and heavy winds caused the clan to begin to worry what was amiss, and drove them to find shelter in the dens.

Sef and Fawn were already lodging together at that point, and it was in the warmth of that den that Soteria could not allow the risk to endure any longer. The two were speaking of a future together when the ground began to shake.
They both heard the booming “No!” that rang like thunder in the air, and they knew it was for them. A shock went through their veins as the knowledge of the situation was passed on to them, and the pair sprang apart, pressing against the sides of the den and fur rippling in a frenzy.

Fawn felt despair entered her heart again. She loved her brother. A brother so far in the distant bloodlines that the chances of ever meeting were fragile at best. Yet the island had wanted a companion for Fawn, some sort of family for her to be with. For the first time in a long time, Soteria regretted guiding a dragon to her clan. Even so, it was for the best.

Fawn said goodbye to the clan, and to her brother. She gifted him her favorite vest, and a loving hug. She didn’t hate him, and the feelings she had begun to feel for him had changed into something that was more appropriate. Even if it was tragic, all things happen for a reason; This was just the final push in the right direction.
She knew it was time to find a new home. Soteria would always be in her heart, and someday she might visit again. But for now, she was off to find her place in the world.
