Dearest brother Shade,

My mother, Tracker, has told me that you are my half-brother, but that you moved to another clan when you were very young, and we got Summer instead. Sometimes I think that I would like to have another brother instead of Summer; she is very nice, but can be rather strange and wild. Many dragons have come back and forth between Tracker’s clan and the clan you moved to, but most of them have been very young like you and Summer were and do not remember anything.

I have been to several of the clans’ festivities and galas, but they do not give me a good idea of your clan’s life. Is it very different there than it is here? I do not expect that many clans are very different, except for the plague clans; but those I do not know very much about, other than that they can be quite vicious. But I suppose I am stereotyping, and that is not a very good thing to do.

In this clan (we are called the House of Oios, but I suppose you might know that), we are organized into elemental Royal Houses. This is a very new thing, and many of the houses do not yet have patriarchs or matriarchs or heirs or lorekeepers or anything. I am an heir to the House of Oios, which is the clan’s largest elemental house, being the Shadow Flight one. Tracker has told me that you are eligible as an heir, too, if anything happens to her, because you are one of her children. Summer is only partly eligible because she is an Arcane Flight dragon; but the arcane elemental House, the House of Ajarjes, is strictly wildclaws only. (The wildclaw Farar, who came from your clan, is Ajarjes House’s patriarch.)

I am my clan’s author and playwright. (If you have been to the festivities between our clans, perhaps you have seen my plays performed? Myteness and Flutter are quite magnificent in leading roles, I must say.) There is a ridgeback in my clan (his name is Fritz; he is an overseas trader) who is always asking me to write him goofy books about his adventures as the “Courageous Captain Fritz”, but he pays well enough that it is worth taking time off of my bigger, more personal projects. (I think our clan’s bookbinder, Demra, is quite tired of Fritz’s books, though.)

So what do you do for a living in your clan? I have tried to ask around my clan but nobody knows. Are you one of those wild, party-animal social butterflies like Summer and Quasar? Tell me about yourself and your clan; I am very interested to hear. I have had to make up lots of stuff about the clans in my books, but I don’t have a large variety of clan hierarchies that I know much about, so I have to make up many things if I want something different. But of course that is not the only reason I want to hear from you; you are my brother, and I am interested in your life.
