Pay your dues to the ferry dragons.

Each child is hatched on the river. They learn how to predict the moods of the waves before the wobble of their new legs goes away, how to associate different shades of the sky with an oncoming storm or a calm day before their wings can take them off the deck of their mother's little ferry. They learn how to sing, how to make their voices lull a drake to sleep with the barest amount of effort, but not all of them are born with the talent. Some grow weary of the unpredictable waters and the constant motion of the boat, and long for solid ground.
