The head jewel helps him concentrate and use the Light powers he's been gifted with. Many of his attacks come from that.

The thorns that grow all over Bright aren't a hindrance; they actually seem to respond to his Light powers! Most think he was a victim of a failed spell, but he's never really decided to say how exactly it happened...
