"poison is in everything, and no thing is without poison. the dosage makes it either a poison or a remedy." ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ From a young age, Valenteinn felt an urge to distance herself. There was something weird in her wiring. Most pearlcatchers feel the instinct to create their pearl after hatching, but she didn't. Dragons who lose their pearls are shunned, but what of one who never had one to begin with? Her family was not cruel. She was loved like any other hatchling, regardless of her oddities. Her mother was a graceful, elegant being, and she respected her. But she felt more of a connection to the winds than to her family. Upon reaching adulthood, she left, as many young ones do. It was so liberating to be able to wander, to let the air take her where it chose. Like this, she drifted, with little care for where she went. She was happy, but she was aimless. It was one day that marked a turning point in her life. A few minutes, even. Foraging for food, she had unintentionally scared away a large bird who had been picking at a log. Curious as to what had been so interesting to it, she padded towards it and peeked beneath. Her greeting was a soft, weak hiss. A small snake hid under the wood, curled in a ball and bleeding lightly from a few wounds on its exposed side. Staring at the injured creature, Valenteinn eventually made the move to reach underneath the log. As her paw grazed the smooth scales, another hiss responded, but there came no strike. The animal allowed itself to be scooped up by the drake, and she cradled it. It fit snugly in her arms. For the next few days, she stayed put and cared for the snake. She even caught it a mouse, though it initially refused to eat. Nonetheless, it began to heal and perk up, and soon Valenteinn and her new companion were one with the winds again. That snake inspired her. She saw it as a noble little being, and it soon filled the role of a pearl for her; she was never without her friend. She named it Sprout. Sprout sparked a fascination for snakes in general, and from that, Valenteinn also became intrigued by venoms and toxins. She now lives as the Oceanarium's toxicologist and keeps various snakes in her lair with her. Those who are venomous she milks in order to make medical use of their venom. After all the bites she's sustained, she's become tolerant to venom, making her perfect for studying the use of it. Toxins are a fascinating field of study, she explains, and potentially very useful to dragonkind. She is still very much a loner, but has passed her nomadic phase, content to settle down and study. Though she is a quiet member of the clan, she is an important one and enjoys the elite status of "scholar." |
