“Hey! Come back!” the hatchling shouted, charging after her playmates with an excited laugh. She weaved through the nests, pouncing and pawing after their tails as they scattered and pivoted away. Some of them crouched behind eggs and some of them scrambled over rocks. They dove and tumbled, squealing with delight, as they continued their game.

Inevitably, the hatching slid through the dirt and collided with an egg. The thick shell kept it safe, but it jostled in it’s nest. The hatchling squeaked in confusion and nosed at it. It rocked slightly, but quickly rolled back into place.

“Now, now. You must be careful,” said Rose, her voice firm yet sweet as her graceful neck craned over the hatchling. The little one looked up, eyes wide with apology. “You have to be gentle. These are babies, just like you. You wouldn’t have to hurt one of your little brothers or sisters, would you?”

The baby squeaked, and Rose chuckled. She pressed her nose against the hatchling, guiding her away from the eggs and back to her play.
"My sweet, there is nothing to fear."
