Petals wafted like snowflakes through the air on the day of Samar's birth. It had been a difficult pregnancy for her mother, and an unspoken fear that Samar would bring about the empress' death had hovered in the palace for months. Priests and priestesses believed the babe would bring about calamity, that the hard pregnancy was an omen, that Samar was a plague festering within her mother's womb. Half the palace staff expected the child to be deformed. Instead, Samar was born just as any other infant, and celebration for the new princess seized the Lucent Empire.

Unbeknownst, however, was that Samar had been born with an usually strong connection to magic, unlike most individuals of the empire who are devoid of it. It first manifested mere days after the princess' birth. In the wee hours of the morning, a handmaiden of the empress had gone to check on the babe, only to discover a beast - caught in a constant shift between human and dragon - within the crib. The empress awoke to the maid's scream.

As soon as the empress laid eyes upon her child, she understood. Her daughter was sarkany - an individual that possessed the rare ability to shed her human skin for a dragon form. Gently, she gathered Samar into her arms. She shushed her daughter, whose cries fluctuated between an infant's wail and an inhuman shriek, softly. She crouched down to the babbling handmaiden, who had collapsed on the floor, and smiled. The maid had never seen her mistress smile. Moonlight pooled around them as the empress smoothly pulled a dagger from the sheath around her thigh, and buried it in the maid's chest. Her daughter was sarkany, and forever would she suffer if anyone were to know.

From a young age, Samar struggled to keep herself in humanoid form. Her mother had made it abundantly clear that misfortune would befall her if anyone were to discover her secret. The empire, unlike many other nations, had had little to no connection to magic for centuries. Because of that, negative attitudes had developed towards shapeshifters. To be sarkany was to be lesser, and so Samar feared growing close to anyone, lest she slip-up in front of them. She struggled to get along with the other noble girls, no matter how her mother tried to foster friendship between them. Their company was stifling. She didn't care about dresses, or dolls, or which way the servants had braided her hair that morning. She wanted to taste the wind, to grind sand between her teeth.

Samar took up swordsmanship. The discipline would help her control her shifting impulses, she believed. Her bedroom overlooked the sparring yard, and she had spent years gazing down at the soldiers. She thought there to be a strange beauty to the way they danced around each other, grunting and jabbing.

The first day she had a sword in her hands was the first time she nursed a black eye. The second month meant she had a cracked rib. Each year that passed meant another broken bone, a scattering of scars, and too many bruises to count. Her father had warned that if she truly meant to take up the sword, his soldiers wouldn't go easy on her. They tried to break her. She was supposed to be a princess. Glory earned in battle was supposed to be reserved for her older brother, who would one day succeed their father. She proved them wrong.

Though Samar still has yet to so much as glimpse a real battlefield, despite her father's frequent campaigns, years of training have led her to call herself a warrior. She spends her days among soldiers reserved for protecting the palace, talking a big game with little experience to back it up. Still, she's quick enough on her feet and hits hard enough for the other soldiers to treat her as one of their own. Some even admire her.
