» Sometimes he still wakes up in the dead of night, cold sweat clinging to his skin leaving a chill all the way down in his bones, breath stolen and his heart just hammering in his chest like it meant to break through his ribs. Leave him bloody. Leave him broken. Sometimes he still wakes up in the dead of night feeling hands on him and ice-cold fire coursing through his veins and his eyes would glow this ghostly-white before flickering out. Sometimes he could feel tendrils of shadows coiling around his neck like they meant to squeeze the very life out of him, cut through tendons and sinew like sharp thin wire pulled tight. He could hear the heavy sound as his head hit the floor. This body was a betrayal. This body was not his own. » Mura never knew his parents. He hails from a Shadow clan — evident from his dark, dark eyes, and maybe a little obvious from the way shadows seemed tangible around him sometimes, wrapping themselves around his body to cloak and protect him when he needed it. Maybe that wasn't something that happened to all dragons who shared his element. He wouldn't really know. There are moments where he's pushed from his body and made to watch himself, trance-like, and he doesn't know how to make it stop, and this completely terrifies him. It's happened as far back as he can remember. That isn't saying much, all things considered, but it's safe to say he was incredibly young. He always wondered: was he born Shade-touched? There had to be something so, so wrong with him. Why else would he have wound up alone right from the start? The Seer found him, alone and cold and half-starved, lost in the Starwood Strand. The Seer promised to keep him safe. The Seer didn't seem to be afraid. » Mura was the firstborn child of a powerful ruler who could hear the Shadowbinder's whispers, who could manipulate darkness and shadows to his will, and — his greedy, traitorous mate, who got himself caught selling clan secrets to an enemy. The traitor was stripped of his soul and cast out into the brambles, to wander lost until he likely met his death. Their child, well, he had the misfortune of sharing the traitor's blood and his appearance. His birth clan's ruler, in all his fury, banished Mura as well. He was so, so young — he wouldn't be able to understand what was happening. At least he kept his soul intact. He was tiny, vulnerable, barely able to walk; he'd lost track of how long he'd spent wandering through the Tangled Wood by the time someone had found him. |
