“You try too hard,” Flutter says to her one day as they’re dressing up for yet another of Jasper’s plays. This time feels more important, somehow; there is a larger audience, certainly, with dragons from not only Clan Mismatch but a couple other small neighboring clans here to see what Tracker’s clan can do. It’s been a nice Chestival so far, and Myteness isn’t really sure what Flutter’s words are supposed to mean, so she decides not to read too much into them and not to be angry. “You don’t try hard enough.” “Excuse me.” Flutter adjusts the butterfly mask she always wears, blinks her narrow green eyes, and examines her reflection in the full-length mirror placed in the dressing rooms for just this purpose. In this play, she portrays a rebellious warrior princess, and the slightly ragged, royal-purple cloak thrown carelessly over her shoulder, as well as the sword strapped to her waist, fits the image beautifully. “I try plenty hard.” “Well, maybe,” Myteness says teasingly, “it’s because you don’t need to try to do your job. You just… do it. And that’s why I ‘try too hard’ to you. Because it’s more work for me.” “I don’t know if I should be insulted or complimented by that,” Flutter observes. “Both, I think,” Myteness says, after a moment’s thought. Flutter tugs at the clasp of her cloak and shifts subjects. “I hate this thing.” “It’s only one more night you’ve got to wear it for,” Myteness says optimistically. “It restricts my movements,” Flutter whines, adjusting and readjusting it. “Oh, shut up.” Myteness has heard Flutter complain about the cape for the last two weeks they’ve been performing this play, and she’s getting pretty sick of it. “How about we go for dessert afterwards? Something Water-made, I think.” Their current stage is located right where Water, Light and Shadow meet, and while Myteness has grown to enjoy Shadow delicacies, trying something different for a change is always good. Besides, it’s not like she can’t afford it; her job pays well. “Nature cooks the best desserts,” Flutter argues. “If there’s a booth selling Nature desserts, we’ll get that instead--but I do want to try something from Water,” Myteness says. “I hear good things from Rage.” “Rage,” says Flutter firmly, “has very poor taste.” It’s well known that Flutter generally disagrees with Rage, and doesn’t like coatls very much, but Myteness has found that Rage is a decent dragon in general. She tries to keep her mouth shut, though. If she lets Flutter get on a tangent about coatls, she’ll never stop. Instead, she lets her eyes drift around the room. She shares a dressing room with Flutter, who has decorated her half of it with several mirrors and many posters and paintings of herself so that Flutter’s face gazes from every corner of the room. Myteness, however, has kept her walls mostly bare, with only a single mirror for checking her outfit and a couple of hooks for clothes that need to be available for quick costume changes. Jasper’s sister Summer pokes her head into the dressing room and waves hurriedly. “Come on!” Myteness hurries after Summer; after a final tug at her cloak, and a muttered complaint, Flutter follows. They pass by Latha, sitting in her booth with her instruments scattered around her, holding up a lute. She grins at Myteness and Myteness returns it; Flutter huffs and does not. Zibelthiurdos, who manages the curtain and lighting, gives them a nod when they hurry by. Summer leaves them at the entrance to stage left and bounds away, probably off to attempt to squeeze into the audience--Myteness doubts there will be room; all of the Chestival performances are usually packed. Myteness makes sure her silks are correctly arranged; at a hiss and a shove from Flutter, she gives up and takes in a single deep breath before stepping onto the stage. The explosion of cheers that greet her make everything worth it, even an occasionally annoying co-star. |
