Biography

Gale's Thoughts: Kasper

Kasper... has not had an easy life.

I knew slave traders existed in Sornieth, but it was always a fact of life I'd been able to blissfully keep out of sight and out of mind. It's not a terribly common practice here in the Sunbeam Ruins, to the best of my knowledge, but since Kasper ended up with us via some stroke of luck, perhaps I am just unwillingly ignorant to its existence.

I met Kasper at the auction house, and I would never have noticed him if it weren't for Blake. Most of the time, dragons at the auction are there by their own choice, whether to find a new clan to live in or to gain passage to wherever it is they need to go. On the other hand, lots of clans rent out members of their clan as mercenaries or hunters or grunt workers, and those dragons are not always in the best of shape. Whether it is because their clan is already poor and weak and desperately needs the money or simply because the dragons have been worked for too hard and too long is anyone's guess. Either way, it's an easy way for a dragon to find a new home, even if it is only a temporary one.

Kasper was definitely one of those dragons that had been put through the wringer. He was decrepit, drained, crumpled in a heap on the floor, and despite all of that, still had enough fight in him to crack a sarcastic joke at his own expense. At the time, Chiaroscuro was in the middle of its first major expansion, and with all the extra work needing to be put in, we really couldn't afford another mouth to feed, our hunters already tasked to capacity.

But Blake was adamant that we take him back with us, and my husband and Elita (who had uncharacteristically come with us that day) agreed, so Blake helped him on the long march home, and we had our newest resident.

Gods, I've never met a more stubborn dragon than Kasper. He's sarcastic, dry-witted, sassy, and there's a smug smirk constantly on his face. When he does or doesn't want to do something, there's no changing his mind. I do wonder if he was always this way or if he's adopted these traits to avoid letting anyone too close and to maintain some sense of agency over himself. Even now, I can't say I'm good friends with him by any means, though it's clear he has respect for me, and he's told me a lot of his story if only to make me more aware of the dangers that he's experienced first-hand.

Blake and Elita are the only ones he's truly close with, Blake especially so. It was so easy to see when Blake started falling in love with him, and even though it took a long, long while, they finally figured it out and have been together ever since. Kasper is clearly sometimes still baffled by his boyfriend's unrelenting happy attitude, but for a dragon who so clearly deserved more love early on in life, he has an overabundance of it now.

Sometimes Kasper's past shows up in dramatic ways: he gets very sick when the weather is cold and damp, his scars will make flying and sometimes even walking a stiff and painful affair, and he's prone to panic attacks and getting lost in his own memories. I don't know how to help him a lot of the time, but he's here, and he has dragons who care about him, and if there's one thing I can make sure of, it's that no one will ever hurt him again.
