Elena Rowen

She is cold. Not cold in a way that drives people away, but in a shimmering, hazy sort of way, where she reveals just enough to pique someone's interest, yet conceals the rest, and eventually you forget that you were interested. She wants you to. And she is cold in a way that drives people to try to make her less so, but nobody has come close to succeeding. She hides at the back of the lair. Not because she is afraid of other dragons; she is not. Everyone will tell you that. But she is afraid of herself, of her own incompetence, and she is afraid of the way they would treat her if she ever broke something, botched something, did anything the wrong way. She's a perfectly competent dragon, but she doesn't show it, because she has been taught to never try again if something blows up in her face. She has only ever been seen doing one thing. She is not a fighter. She doesn't fight, because she isn't good at it. Instead, she hides behind the warriors and tells them what to do to win the battle. This is the only thing they have ever seen her doing, and despite spending all her time with them, she doesn't talk to them in public. She doesn't talk to anyone in public. She's frozen with fear of herself. Laughter is her enemy. When others laughed in the past, it was always directed at her. She was useless. Worthless. Nothing. She was like the rocks on the ground; listless, inhuman, gray. Yet there's something about her that triumphs. She is slowly, slowly, coming out of her shell. The warriors hear praise from her on occasion. The warriors care for her. She doesn't know it. She speaks occasionally; she ventures away from the back of the lair at times, and the other dragons watch her. She no longer snaps when somebody asks her a question or tries to be friendly. She no longer matches everything with an overly honed wit. She is becoming what she really is. She is soft. A side she never shows. She is gentle. But only with the wounded. She is kind. But only to those too young to appreciate it. She is skilled. But only in the areas she's never failed in. She is calm. All the time, deep down. She is broken. But in ways one cannot see. |
