BIO
If Bark had prior experience as a bug-catcher, the others are still waiting to see it.

He tumbled into the clan from under the watchful gaze of the leader Modremoth and has remained tumbling ever since. With more energy than his small frame seems capable of containing, Bark spends more of his time eating dirt than standing on it. Still, he embarks on all his ventures hunting in the Gladeveins with an exuberance typical of one used to success. However, despite his enthusiasm, Bark collects more grass stains than bugs, and finds his mark less often than he finds stray tree trunks.

Despite all his inefficiencies, he is never replaced and never allowed respite from his work. Voltair, for all his exacting business practices, remains adamant in Bark's position as bug-catcher within the Viridian Labyrinth. Even if it means losing more insects than he catches. Though he refuses to divulge his reasoning for the job placement, it is clear that he commands a figure of reverence over his charge. Perhaps it is for this reason that Bark is careful to never allow his true interests to get in the way of Voltair's bidding.

For though he undertakes his tasks promptly, any free time he manages to scrape up is almost always relegated to the small collection of books he's managed to smuggle into his room. Though not a talented mage, he retains an intense interest in thaumaturgy, running a variety of dubious experiments out of an empty storage chamber in the caves and producing equally dubious results.

This is an interest he also nurses to the detriment of any social skills. Though always eager to engage in conversation, he does so with such disjointed enthusiasm that anyone unfortunate enough to get caught with his attention soon finds themselves desperately searching for escape. Unable to properly frame his words or put them through any kind of filter, Bark can often come across as tactless and unkind. This has resulted in most of the residents of the clans avoiding him, leaving him to take many meals alone with his books. Though the solitude does not seem to bother him, seldom will his face light up as brightly as when he is solicited for interaction. Perhaps it is for this reason that Glissa has taken to sharing afternoon snacks with him, chatting over cups of spiced tea.

Despite any closeness he may foster in another, however, he remains clumsily guarded over the details of his past. When pressed, he often stumbles and changes the subject, fiddling with his tinted goggles. They are an item he never removes, under claims of sensitivity to light. These are claims he insists upon, even in the presence of total darkness.

STORY
“Tell it again Daddy!” Bark yelled, trying to crawl onto his lap and knocking his sister out of the way. She wasn’t really his sister, just like daddy wasn’t really daddy. But he still loved them equally.
The other hatchlings heard, and piped up with him.
“Yes! Yes! Again! Pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaasssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeee?!”
Dandelion chuckled and pulled Bark properly onto his lap. Stretching his shoulders until they cracked, he began.

“Well, this happened a few days before you were all born, so luckily the story is still pretty memorable.
So many, many clans of Nature flight were in high spirits, preparing for Spring, when Life- our element- blossoms anew. Many mummies and daddies tried to plan ahead, so that their clutch would hopefully hatch on the equinox, the first day of Spring. Many dragons believe that the Gladekeeper blesses those who are hatched on that day. That’s you guys!

Now, the Ice flight decided that they'd rather keep their winter, and of course cancel delay the arrival of Spring. You all know more or less how that went, clans allied themselves behind either Nature or Ice, and with hard fighting our warriors seemed able to shut out the cold.”
Many hatchlings cried and complained at Dandelion’s choice to skip ‘the good part’, but Bark kept quiet, eager to listen.

“So Spring was nearing, with only a few wee hours of the night left between Nature and success, and we were winning! But then Ice struck with their flash freeze! Rather than trying to secure victory region by region, they went straight to the Viridian Labyrinth's islands. Frost quickly crept around the edges of our beloved jungle, our Gladeveins began to freeze again! Without drastic action, it was clear that their icy bite would work its way right into the heart of the territory.”

The hatchlings gasped in unison and huddled together, enraptured by the story. They could still feel the cool breeze in the air, and pretended they were the valiant Nature warriors, dying for their territory. Dandelion chuckled at their antics. Spreading his arms to indicate the magnitude of his story, he continued,

“All the Nature clans gathered in unity. Their best warriors spearheaded the effort, but every dragon that could be spared was called for- and they came willingly. This was their home, their Goddess, their way of life they were fighting for. The cost would be high, but failure would be fatal!”

“Is this where you come in, daddy?” a voice piped up. Dandelion looked down to see Bark staring in awe at him. Not wanting to tell him that he was sent home for ineptitude, Dandelion smudged the details of the story ever so slightly.

“Oh yes, Bark. This is my favourite bit. Imagine, everybody, your father CHARGING IN with the big scary wildclaws! In fact!” he cried, picking Bark up out of his lap and setting him down with the others. Getting up and stretching, he crouched down, whipping his tail back and forth.

“I snuck up on a REALLY BIG dragon, as big as TWO guardians!” The hatchlings screamed and chattered, lining up next to him and crouching.

“And then… I pounced! Onto the dragon, and ROARED REALLY LOUDLY!” As he leaped into the air, the hatchlings followed. Most tripped over their feet and faceplanted, but stome of the more elegant hatchlings leaped impressively. Bark just tumbled instead, begging Dandelion to watch him. After the hatchlings had stopped trying to roar REALLY LOUDLY like Daddy, Dandelion batted at the air with his paws.

“And then, I swiped at his face. I swiped left, right, fwap, fwap! And then I bit his legs, and tried to steal his weapon-“ Ignoring all the hatchlings’ attempts to copy him, he spied the other dragon watching him. With a smirk on her face, she shook her head, and left. Glancing at the hatchlings, who were watching him intently, he hesitatingly mumbled
“And then, uh… He uh… “

“Did he run away? I would have if I saw daddy angry!”

“uhh yes! He ran away with his tail between his legs! He was so scared, he cried!”

The hatchlings cheered and took turns to pounce on each other, fighting over who was going to be the pouncer next. Feeling a tug on his feathers, he looked down and saw two pairs of wide green eyes watching him. Bark.
“And what happened next, daddy? Did you save me?”
Feeling his heart break, he picked Bark up and held him close to his chest.
“Yes Bark. I saved you. Your egg was sitting all alone in a nest, and the ice was heading closer and closer. I picked you up and hid you in my fur, and ran, saving your brothers and sisters along the way.”
The hatchling hid his face into Dandelion’s fur and asked,
“Is my mummy out there somewhere?”
Dandelion sighed, thinking of the frozen bodies lying next to the nest. Ice had taken them in their sleep. They were never waking up.
“I don’t think so, Bark. Many dragons lost their lives to the war. I bet your mummy was a strong, brave fighter, who would be proud to have you as a son. Besides, it’s okay now, I’m your new daddy.

I promise I’ll look after you as long as you need me.”

It was finally time. Clans had heard of Dandelion’s massive litter of babies. Representatives came, selected dragons, and took them away to their own clans. Bark sat there, fur freshly brushed and teeth brushed, next to Dandelion. While a part of him ached to go with one of the strange dragons, they were all a bit scary, and smelled weird. Hiding in Dandelion’s fur, he watched his sisters come and go.

Finally, when there weren’t many hatchlings left, Dandelion began to pack up, happy with the much more manageable amount of hatchlings. As he began to head home, he heard a cry.

“Wait!”

Turning around, he saw an exhausted Skydancer almost fall out of the sky. Gathering herself up and cantering over, she gasped,

“Do you still have any dragons left?”
“Well, no, not really, but-“
“Please! My leader would love to help out!” Spying the hidden Bark, she crouched down to him and gasped in shock.
“My, my, look at you! You are the cutest little thing I’ve ever seen! And such colours! Why, you look like me!”
Bark slowly peeked out and stared. She was right. She shared the same silken body as he did, but her wings were a beautiful white and gold. She was an angel.
“..mama?”
The Skydancer melted at the words, and audibly squeaked.
“Oh, please, sir, can I keep him? Please? I promise you I’ll look after him! I know I’m only an apprentice for now, but I’m training to be the best healer in the world! He’ll be safe in my tribe, I promise!”
Dandelion smiled softly, and assured her he was okay with it, if Bark was. Looking at Bark, he asked,
“Would you like to go?”
“Will I see you again, daddy?”
“I’ll be sure to visit. Don’t let me hold you back”
With a giggle, Bark jumped into the skydancer’s arms as she staggered. As they began to walk off much slowly than she had arrived, Dandelion sat and watched another of his hatchlings leave.
He watched them stop and talk. And he watched the tiny silhouette of a mirror hatchling sprint and tumble back. Bracing himself, he was suddenly tackled by Bark.
“Why the change of mind?”
“I forgot to tell you!”
“What could you have possibly forgotten to tell me Bark?”
“I love you daddy. Thankyou for being my daddy, daddy.”
Trying to hide the tears from his son, he held Bark closer, before letting him run back to the Skydancer.

“I love you too.”

Today had been a rough day for Dandelion. So many hatchlings had said goodbye. And yet he never felt so loved in his life.
