History
A large, pudgy Snapper was surrounded by several Snapper hatchlings, all staring at their caretaker with intent. "The sun began to go down, just ever so slowly. But Lotus was so far from the water!" The hatchlings wriggled in their seats with excitement and fear.

"Oh no!" One of the little hatchlings cried out, a tiny female named Nile, while all the other hatchlings huddled closer together.

"Already, the first stars were appearing. Lotus nuzzled her mate and said, 'I'll stay with you forever.' And as the moon began to rise into the sky, Lotus began to turn to stone. Her mate watched as the petrification crept over Lotus, and when the moon was at its peak, Lotus had completely turned to stone." The caretaker paused and looked at the reactions of the hatchlings. They all had wide eyes and were shifting anxiously, so she continued, "For months her mate stayed with her, hoping she would be released from her stone tomb. But it never happened because she chose land over water and her mate over her own life. And do you know what eventually happened to her?"

"Did she died?!" A hatchling shouted with terror.

"Her mate left her!" The hatchlings gasped collectively. "She ended up without love, without her life, and after years of being worn down by the elements, she crumbled away to dust." All the hatchlings stared at their caretaker with horror. "So, what did we learn from this story?"

The hatchlings all spoke together, "Never chose land over water."

"That's right little ones. Because if you do, you'll turn to stone and your loved ones will leave you and then you'll turn into dust that just annoys those with bad asthma." The caretaker stood up and smiled at the hatchlings. "Alright now, bed time! Hurry along little ones, and stay in the water because if you go on land, you'll turn to stone after sunset!"

~*~~*~~*~A few years later...~~*~~*~~*~

In the depths of the Leviathan Trench, Nile swam along with a pod of other water Snappers just like her. These orphans had grown up in the Trench, and they were all very close with each other, but Nile felt a longing for something other than her life in the Sea of a Thousand Currents. "You know, they say that we can go anywhere because water runs through all the territories." Nile said as she swam with her friends.

"Well sure we can, but what's the point?" replied one of her friends. "All the other dragons are land based. Their homes, cities, everything. So it is not like we can visit for long."

"Yeah Nile," a male Snapper said, moving up next to her. "You remember that story Minny used to tell us as hatchlings, right? We'd become stone if we stayed after sunset. Leaving the Sea sounds pretty dumb to me."

Nile lowered her head to avoid eye contact with her friends. "Yeah...I guess so. I guess I'm just a little curious about what land territories look like."

"We're better off as close to the Tidelord as possible." The male said with a firm nod. "Besides, I hear there are places without water entirely. No water for miles around? No thank you!"

The Snappers continued on but eventually Nile slowed so much that the pod moved on without her. Her deep blue water eyes were focused on the surface, a place so far away from her that she couldn't even imagine it. So long as I come back before the moon appears, I'll be fine, right? she thought to herself. She swam upward just a bit, hesitant and a bit fearful. The change in water pressure scared her the most. Would it hurt her? Or even kill her before she could even reach the surface? Surely not. Snappers are hardy, maybe she could surface safely just like the spiney whales do.

Slowly, Nile decided to make her way to the surface. It was a far swim that took her days to reach. Most of her time was spent contemplating turning back around, and having to take time to hunt made her trip even longer. When she was finally nearing the surface, it began to get slightly lighter and the temperature was changing. She grew more fearful. Just poke your head out of the water and take a look around. No big deal, Nile. You can do this, you're so close. Nile waddled just a little closer, but then was filled with terror as she heard a huge boom from the sky just above the surface. Her heart jumped and she turned tail as quickly as she could, a light flashing overhead and the surface of the water beginning to rumble. Even the Stormcatcher is warning me to stay away from the land!

The next few days Nile stayed close to the surface, mostly because the swim back to the Trench would take too long and partly because she still really wanted to see what would be around. She was so close to Lightning territory that the constant storms made surfacing far too dangerous. After a few more days and with the storms raging above not seeming to go anywhere, Nile had to plot a different course of action. "I've always wanted to see Wind." She said aloud to herself as she swam in circles, pondering. "I could go to Wind first, then Dragonhome. I mean, if I leave water then I have to see Dragonhome. What kind of Snapper would I be otherwise? And if I visit Wind first...well it is closer, so if I get scared, I can come home quicker." Her reasoning was all just to make herself feel better. "There's even an entire river that runs along Wind and empties out near Ice!" After what felt like hours, Nile finally decided to begin the long journey to the Wind territories...

Wind's Zephyr Steppes act as the training grounds for dragons learning to fly. Crocodile, a swamp-going Snapper, decided to come here to fulfill his dreams of being airborne, something nearly all Snappers just can not do. But Crocodile wasn't just any Snapper, he was a Wind Snapper, so that had to help, right? Here, the wind blew across the land, lifting up dragons all around Crocodile as many others were training for flight. Crocodile inhaled deeply, closed his eyes, and then spread his wings just as a massive air current came straight for him. Surprisingly, the wind actually did lift Crocodile off the ground, but his very tiny wings worked against him. They curled back around his body and sent Crocodile spiraling out of the air like a crashing airship. He cried out in fear as the wind guided him to the edge of the steppes and, like a skipping stone, splashed across the surface of the water and then plummeted in.

Nile gasped in shock as the massive form of a male Snapper suddenly cannon-balled into the water she was wading in. Bubbles surrounded the male as he panicked and tried to right himself in the water. Quickly, he pushed himself to the surface, gasping for air and shouting for help.

"I can't swim!" he cried out, spitting out water but inhaling more as he kept going back under. Nile began to panic as well, and hurriedly went to his aid, gripping his arm and dragging him to the surface. "Help! Help!" He continued to cry, slapping the water and almost hitting Nile in his panic. Nile swam to the edge of the steppes and with all the strength she had, lifted the male out of the water and tossed him onto land. He flopped around for a bit, still crying as if he were in trouble, until he gasped loudly and sprawled out in the grass like he had just died. Nile was terrified to be so close to land, so she sunk deeper into the water, just barely poking her head out enough so she could see if the male was okay.

He laid in the grass on his back for a while longer, until he finally coughed and said, "I'm...alive?" Awkwardly, he looked around and then sat up, rubbing his claws through the grass. "I am alive!" He laughed and cheered, jumping to his feet and then spinning around to face the water again. When his eyes met Nile's, she got scared and submerged herself completely. "W-wait!" Crocodile shouted, rushing to the edge and trying to peer down into the water below. Nile stared back up at him, wondering if he could actually see her. It is still day light. I'll be safe, won't I? Nile slowly swam until she was at the surface, her face just a few feet from the male. "Did you save me?" He said quickly, staring at Nile with excitement and awe. She kept quiet, her body shaking from being so nervous. This was the first land dragon she'd ever met. "I've never met a Water dragon before!" Crocodile shouted, his jaw wide open with happiness.

"I've...never met a land Snapper before either." Nile replied quietly. Crocodile leaned over the edge of the water until his face was just inches from Nile.

"You do exist." He whispered, mostly to himself but loud enough for Nile to hear. Nile was about to say something to him when she spotted more dragons in the background all running towards her and Crocodile. Terrified, she whipped around, splashing Crocodile with water in the process and sank deep into the water. "Waaaaaaait!" Crocodile yelled after her, but she was long gone. The other dragons reached Crocodile and they all began to talk, Nile couldn't hear them from the depths, but she didn't want to. She looked back once more then disappeared into the water.

For a few days after, Nile would return to that spot and watch the large male Snapper continue his mission to try and fly. He was always unsuccessful but watching his attempts amused Nile. She so badly wanted to get on the land, but was afraid of the stories her caretaker told her. Land was evil, land was like a poison. So she watched from the water, always trying to push away that itching feeling to just step onto it.

One day, Crocodile was once again trying to become airborne. This time however, he finally noticed that Nile was in the water. Excitedly, he wanted to rush over to her, but then remembered how she got scared away last time. So instead he slowly moved closer to the water, acting as if the wind was pushing him there. Nile watched but as he got close to the edge, she sank deeper into the water to prevent him from spotting her. Crocodile couldn't see her anymore, but decided to get her attention in the only way he knew how: falling into the water. He "tripped" at the edge and fell in like a boulder, but when he suddenly remembered that he actually didn't know how to swim, he panicked. Once again, he flailed in the water, his body mass doing him no good. Nile gasped and went to his rescue, doing what she did the last time. She used all the strength she could muster and lifted Crocodile out of the water and flopped him over onto the land.

This time, though, Crocodile was in real trouble. He inhaled too much water and passed out. Nile watched, thinking he was just being silly again. After a moment that took too long though, fear swept over Nile and she knew something was wrong. Save him! Nile yelled to herself. Gathering all her courage, Nile pushed herself out of the water and on to the land. The grass felt odd, harder than it looked, and made her feet itch. But she didn't have time to examine the land around her. She rushed to Crocodile's side and put her ear to his chest, he had a heartbeat, and it was actually beating rather quickly. Nile had no idea what to do, Water dragons don't exactly drown. She grabbed his shoulders and began to shake him, "Wake up! Please!" It wasn't working, Crocodile didn't respond. Nile looked around but there were no other dragons in sight. She looked back at the water and when she turned to stare at Crocodile, his eyes were open and he was staring back at her.

"You can get on land too." He said in shock. Nile's look of worry quickly turned to one of anger.

"What do you mean? Of course I can!" Nile crossed her arms and glared at Crocodile. "Were you even in trouble?"

Crocodile sat up and coughed awkwardly. "Well...I mean...I still can't swim..." He rubbed his head nervously and looked at Nile, giving her a nervous smile. Nile continued to glare at him, until she finally noticed that the land around her was coated in an orange glow. Her eyes widened and she looked to the sky.

The sun was setting.

"I have to go!" Nile cried, turning away from Crocodile and leaping into the water.

"Wait!" Crocodile shouted, getting up and running to the edge. "Not again! Where are you going?" Nile was already deep into the water, swimming away from the surface as fast as she possibly could. That was too close, what were you thinking?

Despite the scare Nile had that day, she continued to return to the surface. She couldn't get the feeling of grass out of her head, and how the air felt against her skin. It enticed her to keep going to the steppes and visit Crocodile. Over a period of months, Nile continued to visit Crocodile and the two bonded. Sometimes, Nile would leave the water, but she never ventured too far for fear of ending up like Lotus from the stories.

One midday, Nile was visiting Crocodile, and he was showing her how to fly a kite.

"I guess I won't be able to fly, but I can still fly a kite!" Crocodile said, a wide grin on his face as he showed off his kite-flying skills to Nile. "Not a lot of dragons can fly a kite like I can," he said, trying to impress her. "This takes some serious skill. And it is a rare skill too!"

"I thought a lot of Wind dragons flew kites?" Nile questioned, smirking because she knew the real answer.

"Uh, well. Sure they do." Crocodile looked towards the general direction of The Cloudsong, "It's just that only dragons chosen by Windsinger himself can fly a kite."

"So Windsinger personally chose you?"

"That's right!" Crocodile looked at Nile with a toothy grin. "I'm great friends with the Windsinger. I mean, we talk and stuff, at least..."

Nile laughed, "I'm sure you do." She watched as Crocodile maneuvered the kite around, both of them quietly enjoying their time together. But the sun was beginning to set, and Crocodile could see Nile becoming anxious.

"Nile," he said suddenly and quietly, "Can I ask you something?"

She turned her gaze away from the sun and looked to Crocodile. "What is it?"

"Why do you always have to return to the water before the sun sets?" Nile's face filled with worry and she stared at him without saying a word. "Can't you come with me to my home for once?"

Nile stared back at the sun, which was creeping ever lower. "I'm sorry Crocodile...I just can't." She turned away from him and began to hurry towards the water, but her heart was aching. Sighing heavily, she turned back to Crocodile who was watching her still. "Sometimes, Water dragons turn to stone if they stay on land after sunset. I can't--, I'm sorry." With a heavy heart, Nile returned to the water, leaving Crocodile alone once more.

Crocodile stared after her, the wind suddenly coming to a halt and his kite falling to the ground and breaking.

The next few days, Nile stayed away from the land. She wanted to go home to be near the Tidelord again, but not because she missed anything. She wanted to ask the Tidelord if she really would turn to stone. No one would know the truth but him, but the trip would be long and Nile felt an odd sensation of fear whenever she thought of going back. The truth was that she was afraid to leave Crocodile for so long, even though at the moment she was still neglecting him. Every day she would see him sitting at the edge of the steppes, presumably waiting for her. Her heart was torn.

One evening, with only an hour to spare before sunset, Nile swam to the steppes and dragged herself onto the land. Crocodile was nowhere in sight, but Nile wasn't deterred. She wanted to find him and talk to him. You don't have long, Nile. Hurry! Find him! For the most part, she was used to being on land. So she took off in a sprint in the direction she'd always see Crocodile head off into after they parted ways. She cried out for him along the way, hoping he would hear her. The wind picked up, wrapping around Nile and filling her with a sensation of peace. She called out to Crocodile more, the wind carrying her voice further into the steppes.

Crocodile was heading home, his head hung in sadness as he deeply missed Nile. His mood changed the instant he heard her voice. He was confused though, it was getting late, she couldn't possibly be this far onto the land! Crocodile turned around and saw the water Snapper rushing towards him. His eyes lit up and he ran to meet her. She threw herself at him and they embraced. "Nile, what are you doing?" He said, deep worry in his voice.

"I have to talk to you," She said, pushing him away just enough so she could stare into his eyes. "I don't think it will happen." Crocodile looked confused. "I don't think it is true! I can't turn to stone. Crocodile...I love you."

Crocodile looked to the sky, the sun was setting quickly and already the first stars were starting to appear. "Nile...I love you too."

She hugged him again, tightly. "I feel...dizzy."

Nile fell away from Crocodile and he gasped. "Nile!" He knelt down beside her and looked to the sky. The sun was already hidden, the moon just appearing. When he looked back down at Nile, the process had already begun. Her claws were already stone, and the petrification was overcoming her entire body. Crocodile stared in horror as it only took seconds before she became entirely of stone...
