______ Having been born in the hollow caves of the CrystalSpine Reaches, Eider should not have been able to bend shadows with such ease. As his lair mates would often remind him, dragons that sought the origins of life and existence should conduct their experiments in the light of day and consult the stars under the moon's gentle beam. Only in the light can ancient secrets and hidden origins be revealed. Shadows hide false truths and breed contempt for all species. Or so he had been told. But Eider had never held himself to such tall tales. The shadows had always folded to his will, concealing him in their murky essence. Eider would often leap out from the cloak of darkness in what he thought were harmless pranks. Lair mates would scatter in terror and, unbeknownst to him, with each transgression the elders began to wonder if they held a child of the shade in their midst. Banishment would be his fate when he sprung from the darkness, his eyes black and soulless as the shade, or so they said. Eider had never quite believed that part of the tale. Eider marched out from the protection of his clan, ignoring his parent's cold judgment and wandered alone into a world for which he was ill prepared.

Survival was a harsh mistress but Eider had always been a skilled lover. Abandoning the lifeless teachings of his elders, he found solace in the shadows. And where darkness abounds, treasure is not far.

Eider stood at the entrance of a cleverly hidden lair, the shadows of the crags providing him with refuge from the powerful magic that emanated from the entrance. The lair pulsed violently with every step he took. It shook him to the core, compelling Eider to weave a protective spell around the shade, gathering its tendrils even tighter about him.

A fae, as murky as the shadows protecting him, floated just beyond the entrance. She too weaved a spell. By the time he realized what it was, it was too late. Eider gasped as the shadow turned against him. It no longer sought to protect him. Instead the tendrils floated upwards and became serpent like. Terror filled him as they reached out and squeezed, seeking open orifices and soft flesh. The shadow wreathed in an ancient dance, striking his face while it weaved its way ever closer to his open maw. Eider struggled in vain and in a desperate move banished the shadows from his mind. He struggled from the darkness, shaken and breathless. The fae emerged from the entrance of her lair.

"Those that live in Shade are bound to be betrayed by it. It is no place for dragons, shadow weaver."

Her ice blue eyes betrayed her indifferent tone. She was furious.

"Until this day, the shade has never turned against me," Eider replied.

"It was biding its time and building its strength until it could swallow you whole. When you dance with shadows, you will never be allowed to take the lead. It will fool you and make you believe that it bends to your will when instead, it is teaching you to mold to it. Never trust the shade. Now, be gone from this place!"

She turned from him then and disappeared inside her lair, the entrance fading altogether. But Eider did not leave. The fae had transfixed him. Instead of finding refuge in the shadows, he stood in the light, never taking leave from the entrance of this hidden lair. He had been arrogant in thinking that he had nothing left to learn. After all, he could move in shadow. What dragon could have taught him that? But now he understood that there were limits to his knowledge. Now that Eider had had a taste, his thirst was unquenchable. He had believed he had conquered the night only to find that it had conquered him. His skill had been a carefully crafted lie. Now, he sought the power of truth.

On the eve of the fifth night, the fae once again emerged from the lair. She was not alone. Another fae flew before him. She appeared feral; her teeth bared and her crest flared in warning. Her bright pink eyes glowed dangerously. She was preparing for battle and he knew it would not be her first.

"You are attracting unwelcome attention, Tundra." Her words dripped with malice. "I will give you only this one warning: leave now or perish by my hand!"

Eider had no intention of leaving. He did not think it wise to tell this fearsome fae that. Instead, he bowed his head low in a show of fealty. A penultimate act of obedience, it was truly an act off horrific violence to attack a Tundra who has offered this gesture of peace. Neither fae relaxed their stance. Instead the battle hardened fae, whom he suspected to be the leader, spread her wings in a threatening display. He could not help but notice how her left wing was slower on the uptake and jutted out from her at a strange angle. This fae had seen many a battle and her wing had paid the ultimate price. For a fae or a spiral, who spent the majority of their life in flight, an injury such as hers would have meant almost certain death. Somehow, she had prevailed and Eider found a begrudging sense of respect for her settle high in his belly, far too close to his heart for his comfort. The obsidian fae copied her leader’s stance and lowered her cowl. Her tiny hands were ready to wage war the mage’s way.

Eider would need to think fast to survive this encounter. Luckily, he had always been quick on the fly.

“You were right to be suspicious of me and it is true my initial intentions were not peaceful. You have many enemies in this land. I was hired by a clan, who spoke of your insane brutality and who knew of my talents, to destroy you.”

Silence stilled the air and Eider found it hard to take a breath. He continued:

“I ventured here to do just that but I find my blood lust has been tempered. I no longer wish your destruction and instead seek instruction. I implore you, teach me the ways of your clan!”

Neither fae seemed particularly moved by his long-winded speech but their crests relaxed by a spine. It wasn’t much but it was more than he had hoped for.

The piebald fae lunged forward, her bright pink eyes illuminating his soul. It was far more invasive than the shadow that lived inside him. It stuttered under her glare.

“I am Viper and I have founded this clan. I will not simply let your waltz your way into my lair after admitting you were sent to kill me. But,” she paused, her hands waving in the air, weaving an intricate spell he did not recognize.

“If your words be true, then you will be able to walk through this barrier effortlessly and will be welcomed into our fold. No harm will come to you if you speak the truth. If your words be lies, you will drop dead, poisoned by your own falsities.”

Viper and the dragon he would come to know as Lilitu flew back under the protection their lair provided and disappeared from sight. Eider hesitated only momentarily. He did not pause or falter as he pushed through the barrier. Viper stood in harsh judgment when their gazes me and he got the impression she was disappointed he was still breathing. A crooked smile crossed Lilitu’s face.

“Welcome to The Landing's Keep,” Viper’s voice echoed across the vast and empty cave. Ice cold water sloshed at his feet and Eider marveled at the shadow entombed crystal.

Eider was finally home.
