Dawnlings Subspecies Light Concept and Lore by Outpost Status: Endangered

Lore: At the dawn of Dragonkind, Lightweaver crafted all the Imperials from her own essence, but some were more strongly blessed by Her Light than others. These dragons seemed almost ethereal in their soft glow, and in the sun, there were none who could best them.

But this blessing was double-edged. While they thrived in the sun, they slowly wasted away when in shadow. While luminous in their simple beauty, they could not afford to use magic to change their appearance - their essences were too unstable, and they risked death or worse if they tried. And while the Lightweaver loved these children, who stood closer to Her than most of the others, She also worried and feared for them, and as such, when She created the Imperials' younger siblings, the Pearlcatchers, she tried to avoid whatever mistake she had made with the Imperials - who had started to call themselves Dawnlings to honor her and set themselves apart from the others of their breed - in the past.

She failed, but her children do not blame her for it, and love her all the same.


Diet: Dawnlings do not need much sustenance due to their odd physique - they absorb most of what they need from the sunlight, leading to them eating fairly seldom and even then only eating about half of what others their size would. This is often seen as a good thing by the Clans of other Flights than the Light Flight which harbour a Dawnling, as they refuse to eat anything not harvested or caught in the Sunbeam Ruins in order to keep foreign magics from entering their system.
Physique: A Dawnling’s body is in constant flux due to straddling the line between physical and etheral. They are just as much creatures made of pure, elemental Light as they are creatures made of bones, muscles and skin. In sunlight, they draw upon the sun’s radiance to strengthen their hold on the material world, solidifying their bodies and fuelling their actions with their Light and thus growing much, much stronger than all other dragons but the most seasoned warriors. At night or in shadow, though, their physical form slowly unravels and reverts to being nothing but Light. A Dawnling held in darkness for too long fill fade away into nothing, and one staying in the sun for too long will lose all their magic, causing them to die the next time they are parted from the sunlight. They need to maintain a balance in order to keep themselves stable.

This is also why it is so dangerous for a Dawnling to alter any aspect of themselves with magic - it upsets the balance by injecting their system with new energy, and will most likely cause them to unravel in a burst of Light.
