Knowledge Lost to Time
"Nothing lasts forever."

All memory eventually fades into nothing, and even secrets written and passed on can be lost along the way. All things that are learned are eventually forgotten; knowledge is the ever-revolving door through which the minds of scholars tread. There is sadness in that loss, but some things are best left to the oblivion of time.

Thailyn is old, ancient in the true sense, hatched to a time when everything was new and dragonkind had only just begun to spread across the realm. She slept for eons while time marched forward without her, her mind containing all the secrets of the old world, of power that modern dragons never dreamed existed. Calling her a dragon now, however, might not be entirely accurate. After so long spent in stasis, her very make-up has become something else, something decidedly other than dragon. And she does not forget the past, nor does her memory fade even after all these years.

When I was put into stasis so that I might survive into the far-flung future, we did not truly know the fullness of the consequences of what it would do to me. I was not conscious, not in the way that you might describe it, but I was aware. I felt it as my body died, again and again, ageing into oblivion and nothingness. But I did not die with it. I continued, and my magic remade my form just as it would have become irreparable. That is why, once the spells finally ended, I appeared as a Mirror, and not as myself. Even today, years after I have finally reconstructed my true form, I still do not appear as I once did.

Upon my waking to the world of today, I found that I was not alone. Kirosth, my partner, had chosen to come to the future with me. We woke together into the void sub-plane of existence where we had been sealed into sleep. But the door was open, and the world outside called to us. With our new forms, we went out and explored and met the many new inhabitants of the world that the deities had made. And many of the modern dragons we met decided to join us when we decided to make a clan.

We were different. All of us. None fit into the societies we had been born to, and in many ways, I hesitate to call any of us 'dragons' in the traditional sense. Some are certainly not dragons and never were, but some started out no different than the rest and became what they are today by remaining in close contact with those of us who were. In the end it didn't matter, really, where we came from or where we started. There was little place in the world for those lost into the cracks of time.

So Kirosth and I brought them all back to the sub-realm, and with the knowledge of our past, I created the Grove as it is today. It was no instant thing of course, it took months of dedicated spellwork. But I grew the Greattrees in which we make our homes, I hung the stars in the empty nothingness of our eternal night. Even now, retired, I maintain it. I manage the visitors we receive from beyond the realm of Sorneith and keep the borders between this world and the Outside.

Death? That is no longer something I worry about. My remaining duties are few enough that I enjoy spending most of my time with my partner and my loved ones.
