ELITHEA

trait | trait | trait

There are forces greater than the most fine enchanters, the most gruesome witches, the most fierce warriors or even than gods themselves. There are laws of order and balance, impersonal and unshakable by our insignificant fate. And they have to be obeyed, for the structure of the universe must be preserved. This is the lesson Maelere received from an ancient virago, the only mother figure he ever had. He has hatched here, in Lilaethi, long before the sacred temple was built. In the lunar plains, where winds are warm and flowers are always blooming, where virago had her quiet shelter. She was already old and faint back then, retreated into wilderness to find a peaceful place to finally rest forever, although when he was born, she clung to life just for enough to raise young guardian. She believed his birth was a sign, her last purpose. Unlike other guardians Maelere never set off on his journey to find something or someone worth protecting, instead when the virago passed away, he placed the bones in the ground where her shelter was and sworn to protect this realm, he called home for all these years. For his life was meaningless after all, he was merely an enchanted shield, able to reflect any source of magic, spell, curse or charm back to caster. He didn't consider himself powerful though, the only thing that really mattered was keeping the balance. Keeping this sacred land out of sight of astral phantoms and realm walkers.

Elithea found him in the very same place years later. Virago shelter didn't exist anymore, but Maelere was still there, with his eyes blankly gazing upon sky. Even if he was surprised she was able to come so close without him noticing, he didn't show it. Or perhaps, he let her for some reason? She asked for shelter and when he asked why would he trust her, she replied:
- If I intended to defile your holy place, would I approach you directly, alone and unarmed? Me by myself against the first protector of Lilaethi? - Golden sight focused on his stern face.
- Gods know what tricks you have up your sleeve, enchantress. - Caught her sight with his fierce, crimson eyes.
- There are things far more powerful than even gods themselves, guardian. - Her voice was raspy, as if she had been traveling for a long time. - I think you know something about that.

Maelere did let her stay, although had many doubts if it was the right decision. It took Elithea some time to earn his trust, he wasn't thrilled with her idea to forge the sanctuary, but wasn't opposing when she first brought Illveria, then other night children, or when they offered to build the temple in the place, where virago once lived. It somehow felt just right, like they belonged to that place. He soon noticed, he himself felt a part of the sanctuary. They brought him food and every night the enchantress was paying him a visit, sharing stories and thoughts. The solitude he was so used to, appeared so distant then, he didn't even notice when she became so dear. Until he saw that in her brilliant eyes.
- What bothers you? - Her sweet voice reached his ears, but it took him some time to gather his thoughts.
- You told me once, there are things more powerful than gods, much more important than our irrelevant lifes. - He felt the unbearable weight of these words echoing in his head.
- I did. What do you mean? Why would you bring it out now? - Her eyes narrowed as she was touched by some sudden disquiet.
- Elithea, please understand me well. - Guardian looked away and lowered his voice. - You're perhaps the most precious one I have in this world, but I must remain detached to serve my purpose. I... - He lingered.
- If you're trying to say you love me, then no need to embarass youself. - There was no trace of the sweet voice. She swallowed tears bitterly before he could even notice.
- I'm trying to say that something ominous will come. And we both should be prepared. - He answered quietly and took her face gently in claws. - I deeply regret I cannot be, who you need me to be, but we do not get to choose our destiny. - The red eyes hung on her for a while.
Elithea freed herself from his embrace and shook her feathers like she wanted to get rid off that unpleasant feeling.
- Foolish of me to think it could be any different. - She sighed leaning to him and whispered something into his ear. The tiny spark of magic blasted from the tip of her tongue and then she disappeared into the night. When the next twilight casted its shadow over the sky, the enchantress haven't arrived in the top of the temple, but Maelere wasn't waiting anymore.

As the time passed by, he kind of petrified, fusing with temple he dwelled on. Guardian was not gone though, but rather half asleep, hibernated waiting for right time to come and searching through astral realms in the meantime, to ensure the sanctuary will remain unthreatened by the forces from the outside.
