Lair courrier and my first dragon
***

Here?
Oural was standing in the middle of a bamboo forest. Shy sunbeams were playing with shadows on the soil and a cool breeze gently caressed her dark scales. If she listened closely, the breeze also brought to her ears the joyful laughter of dragons nearby. It was the clans of the Zephyr Steppes, just here, outside this little patch of bamboo forest she was now standing in. What a quiet, peaceful place... When she thought about how her life was until now, she realized maybe this was the very first time of her life she felt relaxed.

***

She had no parents. She hatched alone, in the middle of the night, in a cliff crack on Reedcleft Ascent. Has her egg been lost? Abandoned? She will never know that. All she felt as she emerged from her shell was the cold bite of the wind. She was terrified and tried calling for her parents. And someone came. Actually, several dragons came.

Luckily for her, a little pack of a dozen Mirror dragons were surveying the cliffs in search for an easy prey. They were Plague dragons but were outnumbered by bigger swarms of Mirrors that stole their food and so they cross the boundary with the Windsinger domain in hope to find sustenance. And they heard the hatchling call. They kept her among them and she grew in the Plaguebringer domain.

Even if Oural will be forever grateful to them for raising her, they were not so much of a family for her. She did not share their violent tempers and anger. She was eager to explore the world and meet others. So one night, when she judged that she was strong enough to survive on her own, she left.

She travelled back to were she was born. To the Windswept Plateau. And there, she felt home. She met other dragons sharing the same passion for adventures than her. She discovered beautiful places, animated by a constant wind that could carry her wherever she wanted without effort. And one day, she met him. Doku. A colorful Pearlcatcher dragon wearing a strange bamboo hat, carrying with him a little satchel full of letters and little packages. He was a courrier dragon. He taught her the ropes, and she became a courrier as well. She fell in love with him.

"Here will be perfect." said a voice in her back. She turned just to see Doku landing near her, carefully holding his pearl in his front arms. She welcomed him with a smile.
"You sure?" she replied. "It's just that... There are so many places in the world I haven't seen yet. How can I be sure this is the right place?".
Doku laugh and turned his green eyes away, loosing his sight in the horizon.
"This place is perfect for us right now. But nothing stays certain, and you're still young. I'm sure one day you'll leave and discover many other perfect places for you to live. This day, I will not hold on you. You'll be free if you want to."

Three little hatchlings were playing among young bamboo sprouts. The little Pearlcatcher girl was having difficulties following her two Mirror brothers in the game because her pearl kept slipping from her tiny claws. Oural smiled. She never quite understand the obsession of Pearlcatcher for pearls. Doku tried to explain to her, but still she doesn't get it. She was quite surprised when her daughter, just hatched, eat the remaining of her shell and regurgitated a large pearl a few hours later.

Their lair, still a little messy, was now looking more like something nice and cosy. Oural was also now more familiarized with the region and even started making some friends. Yes, everything was fine then. Oural has all she wanted the most: a beautiful place to live in, a family to protect and new friends to laugh with.

***

They left.

She was all alone again. And everything happened so fast.

First, her children. They left the lair to fly with their own wings, discover the world with their own eyes, having their own families.

Then Lifou, a female Spiral and one of her closest friends. She discovered herself a passion for sea wildlife and decided to move to the Water domain to study it and become a great oceanographer. Lifou promised to come and visit sometimes, but still. The Water domain seems so far...

And finally, Doku. He said he feels tired. He said he has seen enough of the world. He said he wants more. He said it's time for him to retire and serve a greater purpose. So he left her and went to the Windsinger service. The only thing she kept from him is his bamboo hat.

***

"I'm not sure this is good idea..." Oural said. "I mean, the Sea of Thousand Currents? It's not two minutes away."
"Maybe, but weren't you dreaming of seeing the world before?" Lifou replied. "It's not too late you know!" She put a friendly hand on the shoulder of her friend. Oural just tried to escape the Spiral insisting, huge, yellow eyes. An awkward silence set between them, but Lifou rapidly broke it.
"Come ooon! It's not like you still have something you care for here. And I'm convinced you'll love the Water domain. Many clans there could afford another courrier dragon, some are pretty isolated from the rest of the wold."
Oural sighed. Her friend was quite right. Nothing was keeping her here. It was an adequate moment for her to leave on a journey and discover another part of the world. She turned and fixed the Spiral in her big, yellow eyes.
"You know what? You won. I'll do it. I'll come with you to the Water domain."

***

was absolutely right. The Water realm is beautiful. And as a proud Wind dragon, Oural had no problems making some new friends. Actually, some of her closest friends even got convinced and made the journey with her from the Windswept Plateau. They were all now well integrated to the joyful community of Shurnscar Wharf.

She sometimes thinks again about Doku. She misses him. But being on her own has its advantages: she as no obligations, no constraints. Sometimes, she leaves her clan and makes a little trip to some other region of Sornieth. She has seen so many beautiful places. From time to time, she even comes back with a new dragon dreaming of adventure and she sadly welcomes them in her clan.

For now, she is happy with her life. How many time will it be like that? She don't know, 'cause like her first love said, "nothing stays certain"...
