The Monarch and his cunning wife, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, reside high in a tree above the waves of the citadel, not only because of The Monarch's instinctual dislike of water, but because of what he revers: monarch butterflies. He seems to have been born of these critters, having grown up with intricate butterfly wing designs across his own, and because of the small insects' acceptance of him. Each year they migrate across the lands and never cease to stop by his lair among the branches, much to the dislike of many of the citadel's residents. Some butterflies even stay permanently, which is puzzling to the residing scientists, Bubblegum and Scully.

Despite his reverence of the fragile fliers, The Monarch is a seasoned and savage fighter, easily able to spot any encroaching enemies that may come into the clan's territory. He is a bit over dramatic, labeling them his "sworn enemies" upon sight, which is quite a comical sight due to his uncharacteristically shrill voice for a dragon of his size. He's a bit of a handful, but his mate manages.

He and the Dr. Mrs. are one of the few pairs who have a wholly monogamous relationship, completely devoted to each other, despite the fact that polyamory is typical within the clan. The two met when they were younger, both independant and antagonistic in nature. Even today, most of what the other clan members see is a bickering couple, as the two always argue almost constantly- but mostly over trivial things. When one spends a long time with the couple, it's easy to see their compatibility. The Dr. Mrs. has been partners in crime with several other dragons before meeting The Monarch, but the two eventually became inseparable in the years since, and see each other as worthy equals. They make quite a team in battle, though they can be reckless when the other is in danger. Dr. Mrs. is a master engineer and designer, and encouraged The Monarch to embrace his affinity for butterflies; she designed and forged his armor herself. After spending many years together, they realized that the Dr. Mrs.'s wings had taken on the same patterns as her loyal mate. His flame-orange wings took on a hint of purple as well.
