He hadn’t always lived within the river. Spectre used to walk the surface of the world and take flight in its skies. He used to roam the Lightweaver’s domain freely. He had a clan, a mate, a purpose other than himself. Until the Others came. He wasn’t quick enough to escape and found himself in new, worse situations. He felt their misplaced fury and wrath, and escaped into the river to flee for his life.

Driven from the surface by the cruelty of the world, Spectre quickly adapted to his life underwater. He'd always been an adept swimmer, and finding food had never been easier. He coasted currents downstream, further and further south, until his river opened up into a lovely forested section. He could pass through the dense woods when he wanted cover, bask in the shallow sections near the prairie when he wanted sun.

Over time, water deposits, barnacles and sediments made a home between his scales. Sometimes, little crabs can be seen scuttling around on his tail. His mane drags through the water gracefully behind him, towing seaweed and brine shrimp.

One sunny afternoon, he watched from below as a brown and green spiral’s nose poked into the water, drinking and looking for fish. For the first time in a long time, his heart raced. But the moment passed, and she left without incident. Maybe there had been some hidden danger, he wondered, or perhaps he could sense her aptitude for violence from below.

Or maybe he had just been nervous.
