No one thinks Ulysses was born anywhere on the Four Lips mountains. He's never said as much, but his soft paws and city clothes and the way his accent breathes around the 't's in his words say it as loud as you can want. Despite everything, he fits in like a local and even the old-timers around are loathe to acknowledge the outsider status he doesn't really have.

It might be the way he knows and laughs at all the jokes, the way he steps careful in the forest and never forgets to sing on misty mornings, or the way he's so easy to talk to - genuinely interested, asking questions, so happy to hear about you and your life that you don't realized he hasn't said a thing about him and his.

Ulysses does odd jobs when asked, but never lacks for money despite having no regular work. He only rarely seems to do more than slouch perched Jake's porch or against the wall of the smithy, plunking away on his lute and humming a song. He's not especially skilled; the chords are clumsy and his voice is too high and piping to fit the sad songs that he likes. He sings them anyway with a smile on his face, in his own merry-go-sorrowful way.

One of the only indications that Ulysses even has a past is Farrah, a squirrely spiral who's only visited the mountains once or twice.

Mosaic doesn't know what draws the mirror to him, but he can hardly go a day or two in town without Ulysses pestering him to take a load of, to sit and sing with him. Mosaic tries to kind but firm - you know, some of us have jobs to do.

MOSAIC

Ulysses and Bean would not consider each other friends, but the Mirror always manages to be somewhere in the background when Bean is telling stories. Later, he can be heard singing the tales his breath as he plunks out a note or two.
