He hatches under a new moon. The sky is black as he breaks his way from the shell, void of anything but the pinpricks of light that shimmer and gleam from afar off. He stares up at them, wondering, fascinated, longing. He learns how to survive. He learns how to get around his small size and constructs traps for prey, and claws for protection, and wigwam-like structures to get him through each night. The sky calls to him, with their wonderful colors and dancing lights. He studies the stars, and sometimes, he stretches out his wings and imagine how it must feel to soar alongside them. He's young when he first flies. There's an angry four-eye on his tail, and the wind fills his wings, and he jumps. He lasts three seconds in the air, but those seconds are more than enough to give him a taste of flight. And once he's had a taste, he can't think of anything else. He learns to fly, he learns how easy prey he makes. He's coasting along when sharp talons infave his vision and he dives out of the reach of a bonepicker. The scare teaches him that his small size targets him, and that if he wants to survive, he'll need to fit. He paints himself black with mud and ash and takes to the skies, hiding in the darkness. Rumors spread of the Night Fury, a creature with wings of shadow who raids small camps for supplies and food. They say that no one has ever seen it. He intends to keep it this way. |
