When he arrived and offered his services as a guard, the clan offered him a more appropriate sword. He turned it down.

Once upon a time, he'd been a warden.
This seemed appropriate, for as a dragon born on a day that should not have existed, he shared a sense of alienation with the monsters and criminals he guarded. Perhaps they too had been misborn, and that had taken them down twisted paths. His own path had led him to the cold and isolation of his Flight's ultimate purpose. And there he might have remained had there not been a day...
...but he did not speak of that day.
He did not speak of his journey out of the Southern Icefields, either, or what it had cost him to leave. It is enough that he is present, and alive, and able to do something useful with himself. Earn his keep.
And he's warm. He never grows jaded toward the feel of the sun on his back, the way it vivifies. He rarely talks, but if he did, he would speak poetry about the northern sun. What it's like to finally feel the tips of his toes, his nose, the end of his tail. To wake up and not be blinded by the light reflecting off ice and snow. Plants astonish him. Colors. That there might be kindness in the natural world is revelation.

That there might also be kindness in other dragons has also been revelatory. The Icefields do not breed gentle denizens. But the Lair by the Sea not only took him in, they did not toss him out again, even as the years passed and it became clear they had little need for guards. Still, they employed him, and more than that, they liked him. They did not even comment on his long silences; one of the clan's progenitors was equally known for his lack of conversation. He was allowed to be as he was.
He didn't understand it, but he was grateful.
