Yanine comes to Lucas most nights, her pale form aglow in the soft starlight that pierces through the murky wasteland sky as she drapes her limbs around his broad shoulders. Fixed as he is to the altar stone, he cannot rise to embrace her, can barely part his lips to speak all the sweetness he's named her with, but she brings herself to him instead. Her kisses taste like honey and sugar, while his taste of iron and blood, and every time they find one another in the dark, they leave parts of themselves behind as keepsakes for their secret lover. For Lucas, it is the remnants of her soft touch lingering on the edge of his clouded mind, but for Yanine, it is the cardinal touch of his blood on her fingertips. He's opened himself up to the magic of the Wyrmwound, exposed veins and arteries to turn his blood to water and bread for the people he's sworn himself to, and so she leaves as always with a hint of this sacrifice.
Saren was born from this blood, the droplets that freed themselves from the fabric of her dress to find purchase in the desert sand like a seed in soil. They coalesced, and eventually formed the hard, solid shape of an egg that remained buried for days until at last he hatched. He emerged like a gem from beneath the sand, glittering in magnificent shades of red, pink, and an unusual blue that drew the attention of several onlookers who just so happened to be passing through. Rubellite, queen of Baalim, found this little guardian to be more beautiful than any of her other desert treasures, and so she had to have him. She plucked him from the sand, but he was wild and unnatural, and so she used her magic to reshape him, unknowing his origins. His form shrank in her arms, melting to a tiny sliver of his former size, so small that she was able to tuck him into a jar she kept laden with soft red powder. He glowed like a lantern from within the glass, and she took him home, presenting him to her king as a gift. Saren grew quickly, and his glow never faded. He smelt like desert roses and shone like a wisp in the king's presence, but though he was taught many things at the King's request, this guardian turned fae never spoke. He remains silent, and even other fae have a hard time discerning the movements of his fins. He was not meant for this small shape, and the power he might have had as a guardian still lingers behind his bright blue eyes. Some claim that the Queen's kidnapping of him was wrong, that a being such as this should have stayed in the desert where he'd come from, but Saren's loyalty now lies with his King. Ansellus is his world, and Saren eagerly serves at the man's side as his companion and assistant. Neither of them know that the martyr they shelter is the fae's father, though from time to time, when the stars shine through, Saren catches glimpse of a pearlcatcher moving through the courtyard. Like a mirage, she disappears before he can approach, but he knows she's there. He just doesn't have the words to tell anyone else. ![]() ![]() |
