Born of the Spirit Dragon Ugin's Dragon Tempests, which thunder across of the sky of the land of Tarkir, Atarka was born into a place of power, as the matriarch of a brood of massive dragons which would live for her. Atarka dominates the mountain ranges and tundra regions of the land, burning, smashing, or eating everything in her path. As the largest living thing on Tarkir, she has a lot of work to do to remain in good health.

Over a thousand years ago, Atarka and her horde were locked in a war of attrition with a fierce clan of barbarians known as the Temur. The Temur and the Atarka dragons were locked in a very even vie for power, until Yasova Dragonclaw, the leader of the Temur, found a possible way to end the fighting. She was contacted by Nicol Bolas, a dragon from another world, who wished to kill Ugin, the progenitor of all dragons on Tarkir, and if Yasova could help him, Bolas assured that the dragons on Tarkir would vastly decline in numbers. The fateful day of Ugin and Bolas' battle, Yasova did try to help turn the tide, but Ugin would survive anyway. Ironically, when Ugin would go into hibernation, the dragon population on Tarkir would explode, which in turn would lead to the end of the Temur clan. With bolstered numbers, Atarka went on to tear Temur asunder.

In modern times, Atarka still lives, and is cared for by her dragons and the fierce band of warriors who are all that remain of the Temur. She spends her time flying about, eating and killing whatever she wants. She has a simple truce with the people who she has subjugated: as long as she is fed and the members of the Atarka clan do not perform magic, then she will not eat them alive.
