Apollo
We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light. Apollo is wise beyond his time. He is a philosopher, an astronomer, and loves to gather knowledge on all subjects. He has many hobbies, one of which is gazing at the stars, and the other is watching the sea life below. They are very different, and yet so alike, the strange distant worlds above and below him. When he was a hatchling on the Tsunami Flats, he loved to spend his time peering into the rock pools and watching the tiny fish and brightly coloured crabs dart back and forth under the water's surface. He dreamed that one day, he may swim in the waters with them, in the great sea. Sometimes the world is cruel, though. He knows that swimming in the waters would be nearly impossible for him, as no matter how hard he tries, he simply cannot learn to swim. This saddens him, but as he grew into an adult he has also grown to accept this truth. While he does still enjoy studying the creatures that live below the water's surface, he also enjoy studying the stars above. Space is fascinating to him, and it's mysteries enrapture him with all it's wonders. On cool clear nights, when the breeze is soft and plays its silent tune through the bamboo forests, he will sit alone on the plains and watch the stars shine above him. Their light calms him, it seems, to his very soul. There is a peace in watching the sky at night that he has found in no other occupation. When he was still young, barely more than a hatchling, his birth clan disbanded and left him alone in the world. All at once, he was thrown from safety and security to isolation. It was, of course, a shock to him, but he knew he must find a new home at once, and so he set out on a journey. He found his new familiar during his trek across the flats he had once loved to play on as a hatchling. It was a tiny Greatshell, obviously a baby. It was so small, it would've sit in his paw with no problem at all. He saw that it was tangled in netting, and this made something stir inside him. He suddenly knew that he must rescue this Greatshell, for whatever reason. Perhaps it was destiny. After many moons of travelling, the tiny Greatshell became not so tiny at all. It grew into an adult, and at the same time, grew in size. No more than three new moons had passed before it was an adult, and half the size of Apollo. It was devoted to him, and he to it. For a very long time, it was his only friend. Very soon he came to a place where the breeze played along forests of reeds and bamboo, and many clans lived out in the open air, free and happy. He saw how clear the night was here, and swiftly decided that this would be his new home. He found a clan who accepted him without question, and he has remained ever since. |
