Fumus was actually within the first few dragons to join the lair. No one really knows when he joined, he just sort of turned up one day and never left. Now he is an invaluable member of the den.
The armour he wears would imply that he is a soldier, yet he doesn't seem to be attached to any armies. Suppose he's just gonna remain a mystery.
