Biography
Unsurprisingly, General Isaacs left soon after that. Rowan let him get ahead a little bit, then followed. Isaacs led him around the outer palace walls. Here, the stone was crumbling, covered by rambling roses. The pale pink blooms were home to bees, golden butterflies. Rowan sighed when Isaacs stopped. "I thought your bloody paws hurt, or something." "They do. My heart hurts, too." Isaacs glared. Rowan thought he could see tears. "How long are we going to be stuck out here in the middle of -" "Nature?" "Nowhere! Nowhere's more like it, Rowan. I don't know if you've noticed, but it's a pretty severe downgrade, isn't it? From the battlefields to a hole in a wall?" Rowan looked upward. From where they stood, he espied complicated stone lattice, carved with glaring gargoyles and beaming Skydancer maidens. Farther above, a rosette stained-glass window gleamed mellowly, catching the setting sun. Isaacs was awaiting an answer. Rowan figured he wouldn't like it, but gave it anyway: "I like it here." "You like being among the common folk?" "No." Rowan laid down on the tall grass, lifted his head toward the sun. "I like being alone out here. If you've noticed, there are more birds. More sounds. Colors. Smells." "You've lost it. I knew it." "I haven't, but you're about to." He patted the ground beside him until Isaacs sank down. "Just listen for a moment. Really listen." Isaacs closed his eyes, frowning. There. That should shut him up for a while. Rowan closed his eyes, too, and let the ache settle into his paws. "But...Topaz is from the Shadow flight." Or maybe not. "And a manticore's my uncle. What's your point?" "We're sleeping with the enemy." Rowan glanced up. The heavy white Imperial was making his way down from the watchtower, stalking along the stone precipice. Rowan had to admit there was something - eerie. But not a bad eerie. Sort of like the nightingale's song eerie - a healthy, natural sort. "You talk too much, Isaacs," Rowan said at last. But his garrulous friend was already asleep. |
